Will the iPhone work in Europe, Asia, etc?

so if oredered an iphone from the usa (unlocked) it would work fine in the UK ? with no problems?
and if there are problems what kind? i need to know all this before i order an phone from the USA. i dont want to buy one from the UK as it is alot more expensive.

anyway.. i'm getting a lot of mixed answers here.
1.i'm in Toronto and i got my iphone3G here.
2.my contract ends in about a year.
3.i'm going to South Korea for a year
4. i'd like to use my iphone while i'm there and continue to use it again once i'm back in Toronto after a year.
5. people are saying you can't use it, some saying once you unlock it, u can use it.
6. which one is more accurate?
7. say once i go to korea, i unlock it... then will you still be able to use it once it's brough back in toronto?
