Weekly News Roundup: WWDC Anticipation, Beats Acquisition and More

The news this week was mostly dominated by Apple's agreement to purchase Beats Music and by speculation about next week's WWDC 2014, but there were some other items of interest.

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is scheduled to kick off with a keynote presentation this Monday morning, June 2, at 10:00 AM PST. The banners are up and everything is set to go. Tim Cook's keynote presentation will likely center on iOS 8 and its features. Another hot topic that ties in with the new iOS

will be the Healthbook app. The highly anticipated split-screen multitasking feature for the iPad is unlikely to be announced, as it is rumored to be not quite ready.

Apple has released a WWDC schedule and app for the iPad. The week long event will feature sessions and labs across six categories including Media, Frameworks, Core OS, Tools, Services and Graphics and Games.

The other big news was Apple's acquisition of Beats Music. The $3 billion dollar deal should wrap up in the fall and includes the streaming music subscription service, Beats Music, as well as Beats Electronics, manufacturer of the high end "b" headphones. Founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine will also take undisclosed positions at Apple.

In a note to investors, Rosenblatt Securities analyst Brian Blair said that Apple will likely begin production of the iWatch in the second half of 2014. He believes Apple will manufacture 18-20 million units and that the company intends the iWatch to supplant the fading iPod.

An interesting photo surfaced this week showing the rear casing of a supposed iPhone 6. It features a cut out Apple logo, leading many to believe that it will be illuminated.

In addition to the multitasking functionality, Apple is not expected to debut the new iMac or 8GB iPhone 5s at this year's WWDC.
