Can I Jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0?

iPhone Dev-Team has reported that Apple's iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 has been jailbroken. In fact, unless changes to iPhone hardware are made in the next generation device, the Dev-Team reports that the jailbreak will work on all existing iPhones and iPod Touches.

Jailbreak apps such as Cycorder and Qik do not currently work using iPhone OS 3.0, and more beta releases are on the way. As a result, the iPhone Dev-Team plans to wait until a final release from Apple before releasing a new PwnageTool and QuickPwn.

As expected, the iPhone Dev-Team has warned against installing the OS 3.0 beta releases if your iPhone is unlocked. According to their website: "If you care about the yellowsn0w unlock, don’t go anywhere near the beta releases. You will lose your unlock, possibly forever."

According to Dev-Team, "nothing other than a hardware respin can prevent our jailbreak from working on all exisiting iPhone and iPod Touches. They’ve chased our jailbreak so far down in the chain of trust, the only way they can fix it is in hardware."

The question remains as to how relevant jailbreak apps will be after the release of iPhone OS 3.0. Features such as video recording, tethering and a higher resolution camera could make many jailbreak applications redundant in the near future.

"If you care about the yellowsn0w unlock, don’t go anywhere near the beta releases. You will lose your unlock, possibly forever."?? So if I understand correctly, are they hinting that 3.0 and future upgrades most likely cannot be unlocked for other service providers?

- I highly doubt hacking phones, even ones as all inclusive as the iPhone, will ever become redundant. I just ran the 3.0 OS update today. Personally, I feel that even with the new MMS feature, copy/paste and landscape keyboard, that I enjoyed my iPhone much more when it was personalized.

Backgrounds, themes, sound packs, folder categorizing and an entirely less "Fisher Price Toy" look to the icons and text screens, made my iPhone MINE.
Now unless Apple decides to allow that kind of personalization legitimately within their own OS, I'll continue to hack the crap out of my phone.

I don't use Cycorder or Qik. and the only "free" applications I've taken advantage of with my jailbroken phone are the ones that change the look and feel on every screen. iBlank, Make It Mine, and any theme packs I've gotten through Winterboard and Springboard are the best reasons to have jailbroken my phone.

Although, I DO plan to get a 3GS once I'm able to.
Mostly for the video capability.
I couldn't care less about the extra megapixel for the camera. iPhone takes awesome photos as it is.
