Apple has confessed to pulling the first soft core porn iPhone application off the AppStore just one day after it was approved. The app, titled Hottest Girls, sold for $1.99 and swamped the developer's servers due to its popularity.
Some were speculating that a door for more adult centered apps had been opened now that Apple has developed a parental control system for iPhone content. One of the categories that limit content on a parentally-controlled iPhone designates applications appropriate for ages 17 and over.
A similar transition occurred on the iTunes music store, which initially did not offer any content that Apple thought would be objectionable.
Apparently, the developer Allen Leung had announced the Hottest Girls application as the first app in Apple's AppStore to feature nudity. As it turns out, it sounds like Leung had Hottest Girls approved before he uploaded topless photos to the server that delivers images to the app.
When the app disappeared, Leung first issued this statement:
The Hottest Girls app is temporarily sold out. The server usage is extremely high because of the popularity of this app. Thus, by not distributing the app, we can prevent our servers from crashing. Those who already have the app will still be able to use our app. To answer the question on everyone’s mind: Yes, the topless images will still be there when it is sold again.
Apple has issued its own statement that confirms the app was pulled for good:
Apple will not distribute applications that contain inappropriate content, such as pornography. The developer of this application added inappropriate content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed, and after the developer had subsequently been asked to remove some offensive content. This was a direct violation of the terms of the iPhone Developer Program. The application is no longer available on the App Store.
Nice try but it looks like Apple has no plans to allow porn in iPhone applications anytime soon.
