Why does my iPhone Gmail say archive instead of delete?

Why does my iPhone Gmail say archive instead of delete?

Apple has added support for Gmail's archive feature with iOS 4. When swiping across a message you wish to delete, the red button that appears says archive instead of delete.

To disable Gmail archiving for an account, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars
2. Select the Gmail account you want to change from archive to delete
3. Touch Archive Messages -> OFF

Now the delete behavior you were used to with iPhone OS 3.x is restored. For those that want to archive their Gmail, the archived messages are hidden from your Inbox. Archived messages can be found in the All Mail folder of your Gmail account.

I tried this and it did not change to delete even with archive turned off. Any other fixes?

I would try again. I just did it on my phone and it worked

it only partially works. turning 'archive off' changes swiping from archive to delete but if you want to delete multiple messages or threads using the 'edit' button -like i do every morning- you still only get 'archive' as an option sucktastic.

What am I doing wrong I can't seem to get to the app to delete my archived msg

It defaults back to archive will not check trash on this email. My secondary gmail account is set to trash

You have to check the deleted messages option that is above the archive option, and then go back one screen and it will show the the "done" button in the upper right corner, press that and your 'archive' button should be no more.

My phone does but where on iPad, I don't see the references for unchecking archive.

This worked!! Thank you!

THANK YOU!!!

La instalación de la aplicación mediante el fichero
APK requiere la activación de la opción "Orígenes ignotos" dentro de Ajustes>Aplicaciones.

There's not even an archive option to switch in or off in my settings

Did you go 2 screens back press a button that says, "Done" ? This worked for me!

Settings > mail, contact, calendars > select your Gmail account > tap on account > advanced > move discarded messages into deleted mailbox > go back once > make sure you press done before you exit hope this will fix your problem

THAT worked! Thank you much :)

Omg thank you so very much for your post!

I'm not a Mac idiot but this has been driving me craaaaazy for like 1 month. I ignored it- as I was on vacation and just kept archiving anything that showed up on my iPhone.

Thank you.

my iphone battery is going out quickly and i have noticed when this started to happen my email also started having problems. It looks like my email is always trying to send an email but it never sends so it keeps trying over and over. Have any solution?

yeah your sent items folder or your outbox might be full. also i have vrzn iphone and i have delete when i press edit and can select multiple messages to delete. i wonder why the posts above they can delete single items, but not multiple?

I just noticed this. I have gmail set as an Exchange account. When I use the iOS mail app, a swipe shows Delete not Archive like you see when using the gmail app. But the "Delete" is actually archiving the mail. I tested and verified. Not what I want at all.

When I look at my gmail account I don't see an option to turn off Archiving in my gmail Exchange setup. I prefer to use the built in iOS mail app as I've noticed lots of emails that don't display properly through the gmail app.

So any way around this in my situation?

I have the same issue and I have tested/verified this as well. Any update on the issue yet? Opening the email and using the delete icon yields the same result as swipe to delete.

Thank you for pointing this out. I have been messing with Gmail's settings but didn't think that this was due to iPhone settings.

I just hit "EDIT" and move the email to the "TRASH" folder.

Great. Thanks. I always wondered why it did that on some emails.

Thanks for this. The archiving was getting rather annoying.
