A sim card would only work or NOT work, now connection TO the card is a different story.

AT&T has, numerous times in the past, cited a "bad" SIM card as a possible source of dropped calls, poor reception, etc.

They may be full of crap, just saying ...

Yeah I heard that too when I was in an AT&T store just recently, that might be related to other safety issues though, in some European countries all the subscribers sim cards were replaced with new ones free of charge automatically (mailed to them) due to the oldschool sim cards being too easy to dublicate, yes copying them was (is) possible. Unless AT&T truely had some bad batch of cards, there really isn't anything like that. I mean have you ever had a "bad" credit card, well yes once it wore out but there is no magnetic strip on a sim card, so it either reads or not, again if they had some cheapo cards that werent working like they should then yeah, but it would in that case not only loose the call it would reset the phone, and it would be IMPOSSIBLE for it to have something to do with "bad reception" as this would be an "either works or not" situation, it would be like saying oh my car gets poor miles per gallon because the fuel gauge doesnt work right...

Yeah, I guess the only way I can see it being the case is if a SIM is so old it doesn't contain information the phone  needs to interact with the network properly.

Well the only intermittent issue would be a read/write issue as you might see on a cheapo memory card, but this still couldn't affect the coverage as such, as it would be either ON or OFF, so yes it could be flipping off/on rapidly but this would still be more of full coverage/no coverage (or whatever you have as coverage in the "full" place Smiley) not POOR coverage as such.

Certainly could contribute to dropped calls or difficulty placing calls.

if you understand how this all works and how a phone interacts with your simcard you will know it would either HAVE or NOT HAVE coverage.

Right, have or not have coverage.. meaning if the contacts or bad it could lead to dropped calls.
