Nice find!
I scanned the NY Times & USA Today, both of which convey it's worthy of the hype while not being "perfect". I'd call them more balanced comments at least. The USA Today one notes that there is no voice dialing feature for example, and the NY times one remarks about the extra steps to make a call. But neither made those out to mean that it's deeply flawed, etc. I own other PDA phones and do like my current ones very much, and at the same time I can name minor irritations with them that are totally offset by the overall convenience of a convergence device.

The lack of 3G is going to be the major flaw in the iPhone.

It won't stop me from getting one, but I'll guarantee the EDGE experience is going to be unbelievably dissatisfying.

EGPRS isn't all that bad as "such" and there is rumors that at&t has sped it up somehow for the iPhone.
But yes for this price of DATA PLAN it should be with 3G!

They said they've upped it, supposedly, but several of those reviews complain of typical, unbearable EDGE speeds.

I mean there is just so much you can do, its more or less like those ads for "super fast" dialup, I mean yeah you can tweak it a bit but its still going to BE dial-up (or EGPRS in this case).

Having said that for me EGPRS is sufficient though, I'd rather have an ALL YOU CAN eat EGPRS at decent pricing $20-29.99 than 3G at double that to be honest, unless I can have a 3G device with Skype voice capability and some full work day's batterytime.

I have a 3G plan now through AT&T that is unlimited for $29.99/month. Includes 1500 SMS.

I don't think the price difference is that much.

3G would be REALLY nice on the iPhone, as many have said. I just need to find a way to stop thinking about that. Smiley

Oh, forgot to mention... I was *REALLY* dissapointed to read in Pogue's review that the AT&T signal ranked worst or 2nd worst in 19 of 20 cities Consumer Reports tested.

I hadn't heard that before and, to be perfectly honest, it's a disgrace to AT&T. I guess it also explains while I'm having trouble placing calls and constantly dropping calls on the "network with the fewest dropped calls" (my ass).

I really hope Apple whips them into shape.

Tell me more please, as I'm considering getting an OQO 02 and do the GSM DIY conversion on it, and at&t obviously has HSDPA that Tmo doesn't

The at&t plans are just too complex to figure out what is what not being an at&t customer currently in any form or fashion.

Well first off we should compare apples to apples (heh..) thereby at&t should be compared to other GSM networks only not other carriers that use other tech solutions, that is like comparing an electrical car to a gas one.

Anyhow the "..fewest dropped calls" I have a seriously hard time not laugh every time I see/hear that as it would never ever cross anyone's mind outside north america to use anything like that as a POSITIVE slogan. I am not sure what it is related to but again I have been using GSM since it was first launched in the very early 90's and NEVER have I had any issues with dropped calls (except in NA that is)!!?

It's hard to tell half the time w/ AT&T. They are CONSTANTLY revamping their plans and the online information never matches what's in the store.

My plan is the Media Max 1500 (or something like that)...  I don't see that online right now, but they do list a SmartPhone Unlimited plan (doesn't seem to include SMS) for $19.99 .. I'm sure you can add 1500 SMS for $10 or less so that's pretty much the same thing.

Here's the link to the AT&T unlimited smartphone info: http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service//cell-phone-plans/smartphone-connect-plans.jsp
