Haven't had the time to experiment with this yet. Anyone else tried this so far?

Success/failure?

No, it's just not worth it to me, even as much as I want them...

23 steps, 16 steps, 11 steps... whatever. I'm not voiding my warranty and hacking my phone so I can have custom ringontes...

i'll wait

I wonder if it will keep the phone from getting the first update (coming soon hopefully)?

the 23 steps takes about 10 minutes to complete.  Im glad they did it in so many steps so its clear and nothing gets messed up in the process.  I did it on tuesday with no problems at all.  It wont prevent you from getting the first update becasue if it does yu can just load the back up of the software to the phone and its good as new.  Live a little

I saw a tutorial on youtube today that shows what appears to be a very simple .. what i'd call 2-3 step process...

Given you have the .m4a file ready, the guy just loaded up iphoneinterface, used the putfile command to put the ringtone file in the iPhone's ringtone folder, and restarted the iphone...

no use of jailbreak, even

i used it, what i think is that the program is able to 'see' the iphone in 'my computer', then it can just drop the files into a 'ringtone' folder, that would mean it didn't hack anything.

well, the problem is that the ringtones live w/in /var/media/Ringtones (or something like that) ...

that path is unaccessible without first jailbreaking the phone.

in other words, even if you are able to interface with the device, you can't see that path until the phone is jail-broken

thus the confusion as to how iphoneringtonemaker accomplishes the ringtone installation w/o a hack

well myself i ve tried it ... exactly like the tutorial on youtube.com
the problem is that u can only sync 1 custom ringtone which is max 30 seconds.
no negative effect on my ifone but am not sure if it is worth it to spend like 5 mins
converting to ACC n than to .m4r instead of .m4a and at the end u know u can sync
only ONE ringtone.

Making custom ringtone is SUPER simple.... Just use itunes.  Guide is on youtube... But essentially you just find a 30 clip you like from an mp3 already in your itunes liberary (write down times). Select file, and goto get info (right click - Get info). Then click options tab - and check BOTH START time and END time boxs and enter times you want the ringtone to play.  Then click OK. Right click file and select 'convert selection to ACC'. Then select the NEW 30 sec file and right click and select 'show in windows explorer'. *Now you need to be able to edit the file extension. So if you cant see the.acc at the end of the ringtone file then you need to goto tools - folder option (alt, 'T', 'O') and goto view tab and make sure the 'Hide Extension for Known Types' is UNCHECKED. Now change the .acc to .m4r. Go back to itunes and remove the 30 ringtone from your playlist. Go back to folder with the .m4r ringtone and run the ringtone ('double click'). And thats it... It should put the ringtone in the 'ringtones' folder in itunes and next time you sync it should put it in the 'custom' section of ringers.

*NOTE - uncheck the START and END times on the original mp3
