As the most popular online music store iTunes has millions of customers which download thousands of music every second.

M4P – a copyright protected iTunes format of "protected AAC". It is a format of downloaded music from iTunes store that can be listened to only through the iTunes compatible players like iPod.

So, if you want to listen to iTunes music with other mp3 players such as Zune, Creative Zen or share them with your friends, you have to convert M4P to MP3.

Now, we can convert M4P to MP3 with two methods.

1.  Burning and re-import.
2.  Convert M4P to MP3 with a Professional Music Converter.

Solution 1: M4P->CD-> MP3

To convert M4P to MP3, you can burn M4P onto a CD (using the iTunes CD burning option), then re-import the CD as unprotected MP3 into the iTunes library.

1. Buy songs on iTunes.

2. Insert a blank CD. (You’d better use a rewrite CD which can be used circularly and use some software like Nero to wipe off the music files you have processed.)

Note: You need to change iTunes settings in "Edit"->" Preferences" before burn and import.

Follow the picture instructions below:

3. Go to File->Create a New Playlist

4. Drag and Drop files you want from your library to the New Playlist.

5. Right-click playlist and select "Burn Playlist to Disc" or you can left- click “Burn Disc”

6.After conversion, left-click "import CD" to import CD files to iTunes library as MP3 format.
(And you can find the unprotected MP3 file by the side of the original file in > "My Document" > "My music" > "iTunes".)

Solution 2: Convert M4P to MP3 directly with a third-party software

DRM Media Converter can convert M4P to MP3 with one step and the speed is up to 27x. It also can convert protected WMA to MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG and various file formats on Windows PC.

M4P is one of extensions for MPEG4-AAC compressed audio format developed with the cooperation and contributions of several companies including Dolby, Fraunhofer IIS, AT&T, Sony and Nokia.
This format was officially declared an international standard by the Moving Pictures Experts Group in April 1997.

Currently M4P (MPEG4-AAC) is default audio format of Apple's iTunes, iPod, iPhone and the format used for all iTunes Store audio.

TuneCab Media Converter can convert M4P to MP3, AAC or WAV in case if your music file was legally obtained and can be played on your PC by QuickTime Player.

That's frustrating, they only operated the store for a while, is there any other DRM-free music store online?

I always use TuneClone M4P to MP3 Converter. My friend introduced it to me. It is very professional, powerful yet easy to use. It can help to remove the DRM protection mechanism and convert both protected and unprotected music files with rather high quality and very fast speed by automatically generating a virtual CD burner.

I'm addicted to TuneCab - all in one converter for any kind of files, audio and video, DRM-protected or unprotected. It can download, save and convert streaming video like YouTube, rip CD's, convert audiobooks etc. And it works with Vista!

Try also TuneCab Online Video Catcher Ultimate. It can download streaming video from YouTube and sites like YouTube and then convert it to any formats.

I would like to recommend NoteBurner M4P to MP3 Converter which can convert DRM protected M4P to MP3 on both Windows and Mac systems.  The converting speed is super fast!

Convert iTunes DRM music on Windows:

Step 1: Run NoteBurner, and click Settings button, then you can set the output as MP3, WAV or WMA

Step 2: Run iTunes 8. Create a new playlist in iTunes and add all m4p files you want to convert to this new list. Click on the Burn Disc button and choose NoteBurner Virtual CD-RW as your default burner to burn the playlist.

Step 3: After NoteBurner finish encoding, the converted file will be automatically listed on the main window of NoteBurner.
Click Play button or double-click any song to play the music.
Click the Folder button to open the output folder, where you will find the converted MP3 files.

Convert iTunes DRM music on Mac:

Step 1: Run NoteBurner, and choose output format and output folder.
Go to the top-left NoteBurner > Preferences…
Here you can specify output path where the converted audio files will be located in, choose the desired output format from MP3 and AAC, and set the output quality.
If you want to be alerted when there is an update, check the option of “Check Updates on Startup”.

Step 2: Run iTunes, and click menu File > New Playlist in iTunes to create a new playlist to hold all music and audiobooks you want to burn.
Right-click on the music in music library and audiobooks in Audiobooks library to choose Add to Playlist and choose the list created. Press Shift or Command key to add more than one file to the playlist at one time.
After adding files to playlist, click Burn Disc button to set NoteBurner as the default burner, and then click Burn button to start burning the playlist.

Step 3: After NoteBurner finishs encoding, you can right click on the music and select “Show In Finder” to check the converted audio files in the output folder.

As the music in iTunes is encrypted with DRM, you cannot directly put it on any non-Apple MP3 player. The easiest way is to burn the music to an audio CD and then rip it back to Windows Media Player or a similar program as an MP3. Or you can get some software to help you. I use TuneClone to do this. Though not free, it is very well worth a try.

Below is its step by step tutorial about how to get iTunes music converted to MP3:
