While the most common resolution today on any so called smartphone is what is called QVGA (320x480 or 480x320 depending upon if it is in portrait or horizontal mode) More on this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QVGAThe iPhone is runing what would be HALF of VGA resolution:

I'm surprised Apple didn't go for higher res than the 50% VGA. But, then again, higher is a selling point of the second US iPhone... along w/ 3G and hopefully GPS.

HVGA? Yeah I was almost going to label it that but I thought first of all I don't know if HVGA is used for something out there, secondly you know how pictures go around the web, so I thought I might create a rumor called HVGA

Yes it is a bit odd that they didn't go with VGA BUT then again that would've meant a different form factor just compare it to the Dell X51V VGA equipped PDA (kind of the reference PDA among PDAs) since the VGA would have a different screen ratio (less widescreen so to speak). http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/2624-Dell-x51v-vs-iPhone#Then also there is the COST issue of course. What though is somewhat odd is that they used a NON INDUSTRY standard.

Not entirely unlike Apple to try to set themselves apart from the herd, though.

Not entirely unlike Apple to try to set themselves apart from the herd, though. True but it also creates issues like the 240x240 resolution Treos do..

Well, maybe it's not as non-industry-standard as you thought, then.
