I've heard that 4GB models may have louder volume (though who knows why)... either of you have the 4GB?

Though I don't believe it will help with ringtones/speakerphone volume, I've had some success boosting my volume for music and video (basically all iPod functions) by turning off "sound check" in the iPod settings.
Give that a shot.

Will try that
And I have the 8GB model, so perhaps what you heard may in fact be true

If you've read of the charge cycle volume fix, don't bother, it does nothing.

Well, I think my ears have begun to adjust or something because it seems at a fairly normal level now

Wish I could say the same thing. I continue to curse my volume.

Certain rings are still quite low, like Timba, but most of the time voice quality has seemed to improve, I sometimes struggle but if I adjust the placement of my iPhone on my ear it seems to get quite good

It is odd the way the ringtones vary in volume so much. It's almost as if Apple didn't normalize the audio before putting on the iPhone.

Has anyone heard conclusively whether this will be part of the first update?

I agree, the different volume levels of each ring tone is something that surprised me...it seems extremely noticeable on the iPhone, though I'm sure it occurs on other phones as well..

Wait, this is a program that is in the iClarified source? and it's only for 1.1.3? This would finally give me a reason to switch up from 1.1.2. What is the iclarified source to add to installer.app again?
