Newbi Question am sorry but I must know

I got a Iphone for Christmas, like the majority of America and almost always I know how to use technology. But I have two problems with my Iphone which I even looked in the manual and I couldn't find a proper solution.

Situation One: Voicemail

No matter what I do I can not set up a voicemail. I have been with at&t for a long time aswell and always have had a voicemail system set up with them. But on my phone, once I enter a password and pick the default or custom voice for the people to hear, it says to me it can not connect to set up the voicemail....

Situation Two: Internet

I have noticed everyone but me can access the internet anywhere they go, however I have the problem I can only do it in a Wi-Fi place, its extremely frustrating and I know there is a way around it but I have no idea what to do.

Thank you for the help and I am sorry if I asked a question in which someone has already anwsered. I have searched the boards and couldn't find any answers so I thought I should post my problem.
