As most of you have already realized, in most areas in the US you cannot receive a call on your iPhone while transferring data. AT&T has publically stated that this is a limitation of the EDGE protocol.
It is not. On NOM1 (network mode 1) operation, the phone can receive calls. Unfortunately, AT&T is using NOM2 almost everywhere.
Apple pushed the iPhone's ability to receive calls while browsing, etc, during it's big advertising push - completely misleading the consumer as this is the case only on WiFi or in rare NOM1 areas. Please join me in submitting feedback to Apple insisting that they pressure AT&T to institute NOM1 nationwide and make the iPhone work the way it is supposed to.

I use a device with EDGE and will recieve calls during data (the device uses data CONSTANTLY) so yes it's not a limitation of the EGPRS network as such.

Have you tried running the field test to see what NOM setting you are on?

Yeah the iPhone field test mode works for the iPhone, not others.
