I've heard lots of rumors in this area. Has anyone read anything that definitively states whether the iPhone's battery will be removeable/replaceable or not?

Looking to find an answer that wasn't speculation or rumor, I re-read Apple's iPhone specs page and there's small print on the bottom:

Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information.

The link discusses iPod and notebook batteries.  As we all know notebook batteries are removable and available for purchase.  The iPod can be sent to Apple for the installation of a new battery.  Unfortunately, although these pages are linked to from the iPhone gallery, the iPhone is not mentioned once in the battery pages of the website.

Why would Apple keep this question unanswered only weeks before the release date?

Spoke to someone at an AT&T store... said they would start selling the phone at 6pm.  He also told me the employees have not been told whether or not the battery will be removable.

Still no word on whether it's removable (doesn't look like it from the available iPhone photos), but they just announced much larger battery capacity.

To give the "knock-off industry" as little info as possible...

YEah but what would the knockoff industry knock off? Microsoft has knocked off the multi touch, but they could never replicate a simple UI

My guess is that the iPhone will require a temporary return to replace the battery - as the iPods do.

Most likely that will be the official way yes, but just like with the iPods..

...there will for sure be aftermarket batteries out after a while!

Yeah, for the crazies out there that want to void the warranty on a $600 phone in order to save a few bucks on an aftermarket battery.

You know, everyone keeps empasizing how expansive the iPhone is, but frankly its not really THAT expensive, if you start comparing it with all the other devices (that if you're going to compare, and if you really can?) run about the same, since you can't compare it what so ever to a MS SP phone since the non touchscreen phones are in a different category both by usage and price. Take the normal PDAs even they are close to the same price I mean they are 3/4 of the price at least and they have no phone in them what so ever and not even close to even ONE GB of builtin memory.

I wish people would stop talking about it being SO expensive, yes it IS A LOT of money for a gadget but frankly its NOT expensive!

The O2 Flame as we speak is on eBay for $895 to $904 and for the eBay haters:
Handset Only Price: $1,024.95
 http://www.mobileplanet.com/p.aspx?i=148478

The HTX x7500 as we speak is on eBay for $899 to $1099 and for the eBay haters:
Handset Only Price: $1,164.95
http://www.mobileplanet.com/p.aspx?i=145430

..and I mean just compare down the list:

"Apple sez between 300-400 charges the iPhone will lose battery capacity -- you'll send it in and get the cell replaced for a fee. Meh. We knew this would be the case, but still, meh."

I think the iPhone price is perfectly reasonable.

As for the battery charge .... My battery on my iPod has lasted me as I don't use it all that much. Anyone know what the fee to replace iPod batteries is?
