The 12th icon is YouTube! YouTube I say! Big news as far as I'm concerend, though it would be bigger if the iPhone were 3G. Everyone else happy about this? Or dissapointed?

THRILLED.
3G would be nicer, but hey - WiFi hotspots will make the phone VERY fun.
I'm very intersted to know if the videos can be saved to avoid redownloading.

Well, if you can, they didn't highlight this feature in the video tour - which you'd think they would have.

As far as iPhone is concerned this is just an added icon (read link) it available for most mobilephones with browser's now (still in semi BETA state though) just need the link http://m.youtube.com (you can look at that even on your PC just not watch the videos)

It's not viewed via a browser on the iPhone, though.
The iPhone has an actual application that interfaces with YouTube. Might present similar functionality, but it's still a standalone app.

This you say based on?

This you say based on? Um, Apple's official announcement of such and video demonstration of the dedicated YouTube application?

Just gets errors trying to play videos. I'm sure they are working on it, however.

This poses an interesting question though - the mobile YouTube site is limited to a certain portion of the YouTube library at this time (and a small portion as far as I can tell).
I wonder if the iPhone YouTube will have the same limited library.

Um, Apple's official announcement of such and video demonstration of the dedicated YouTube application?
You need to access it through a browser just like all the other 3rd party "programs" that will be offered for the iPhone. If you don't have any network connection you won't be able to do anything with the Google maps on the iPhone either! Yes it is true that Apple is using the term application and built-in application on their press release: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/06/20youtube.htmlBut in a similair fashion you indeed need a "built-in application" to view Youtube on ANY device be it Mac, PC or a Windows Mobile device, that is a Video/Media Player! So this is a little play with words really. On all of my Windows Mobile phones (including non touchscreen SP editions) I have custom homepages where I have icons on the "homepage" that link directly to applications and docs and links to the web. Just like on your regular PC or Mac you can have an icon that goes to a webpage this "icon" can be just a link really there is nothing complex with that. Just like on any of these iPhone "wanna be" setups: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_6elFC_SKwhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmptvAombqohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_hMah6J8soThose just a few quick samples I found by searching for videos using the application I use, there is literally hundreds of these now.

True a number of current WM5 phones are having problems with it see this: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=438206The newest HTC devices and Palm Treos (which are also made by HTC) however run it just fine. It uses 3GP files using the RTSP protocol, which appearently the iPhone incorporates unlike MOST WM devices at this time.

Very true, and why I have my doubts about this being a REAL application is that this "release" by Apple was timed so exactly with the "Verizon exclusivity ends, YouTube Mobile opens the gates" news ( Jun 16th 2007): http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/06/16/verizon-exclusivity-ends-youtube-mobile-opens-the-gates/"YouTube hits Apple TV today, headed for the iPhone as well" ( Jun 20th 2007) http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/20/youtube-hits-apple-tv-today-headed-for-the-iphone-as-well/If it indeed ran the direct "real" youtube then there would've been no reason for NOT releasing and showing this earlier! Another point to consider is this, if you have a laptop with built-in EDGE (like the one I am typing on) which would be the closest thing where you wouldn't have any bottle neck on the processing power side but only on the network speed, try to access some video content such as Youtube, and see what happens. EDGE is NOT wide (or in daily speech "fast") enough even for voip such as Skype speech, far from fast enough for VIDEO!

YouTube is going to be great.
3G would be nice but it only really works if you live in a bigger city.

Like I said without 3G there's not going to be any REAL Youtube! There's 3G anywhere where there's coverage.
