Apple has finally brought Find My Friends into the iOS 7 fold with a complete redesign. Say goodbye to the skeuomorphism that once adorned the free location sharing app with stitched leather and colored textures. In its place is a flat, simplified look that matches the rest of the clean iOS 7 interface.
Version 3.0 is compatible with iOS devices running iOS 7 and later. This means if your device is running an earlier version of iOS, the redesign will not apply. Other improvements are not listed under Find My Friends on iTunes, so it's possible the update is entirely cosmetic.
Dropbox 3.0 for iOS 7 has arrived in the App Store. A completely redesigned interface brings key elements of iOS 7 into the file sharing app. Built-in iOS share sheets are used to make sharing and exporting files to other apps even easier than ever. Not only this, but Dropbox has added AirDrop support, so links and files can be sent between iOS 7 devices effortlessly.
Dropbox provides 2GB of free storage to all users, with more available to accounts choosing to automatically save photos and videos to the service. Adding this option provides a total of 5GB free space available. In addition to the redesigned interface and new sharing options, Dropbox for iOS 7 improves performance, speeding up launch, video playback and photo loading.
Google+ fans with iOS devices will enjoy several new features in the latest app update, along with the obligatory bug fixes and performance enhancements. Most significantly, Google+ now makes it possible to upload Camera Roll photos and videos in full resolution to the cloud. These can be shared or added to a private album on Google+ Photos.
With 15GB of free storage, this new Google+ feature acts as a cloud backup, uploading Camera Roll photos in the background. The only catch to the full resolution photo feature is that it's limited to iOS 7 users only. Google+ account holders on earlier versions of iOS can still enjoy other new features in the latest Google+ app.
Jumping on the iOS 7 bandwagon, Amazon had redesigned its iOS app to streamline looks and functionality ahead of the holiday shopping season. Millions of products are at your fingertips with version 3.1.2 of the Amazon app, which is available from iTunes for free. The redesign takes cues from iOS 7 as well as implementing bug fixes.
Browse and search functions can be used to find product details, read user reviews, and of course buy items using Amazon's secure servers. The Amazon mobile app provides one-stop shopping from Amazon.com and third party merchants, including used and refurbished items in some cases.
Apple has released the first iOS 7.1 beta to developers one week after the company rolled out iOS 7.0.4 to fix a FaceTime bug. The update can now be downloaded from Apple's developer center. You can read the complete release notes below.
Last week iOS 7.0.4 was deemed jailbreak safe by the jailbreaking community. However, evad3rs team member MuscleNerd advised users with jailbroken devices to avoid it because there is no going back once you upgrade. The iOS 7.0.4 update brought a few bug fixes and minor improvements.
Apple released iOS 7.0.4 to fix a FaceTime bug that caused "calls to fail for some users." Soon after the release, @iH8sn0w tweeted that the update “has no security changes.” iH8sn0w later added that the last few iOS updates "have not been directed as patching anything jb-related," and that Apple is probably waiting for the iOS 7 jailbreak to be released before they patch any exploits.
Soon after iH8sn0w's tweet, @MuscleNerd also confirmed that iOS 7.0.4 is jailbreak safe, but advised users to “avoid it" if they plan to jailbreak in the future. Apple's previous OS update, 7.0.3, was also found to be safe for jailbreakers by the evad3rs, who are the team of hackers working on the iOS 7 jailbreak.
Update: Version 1.3.0 of the Pebble Smartwatch app is now available.
Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky announced today that the company's smartwatch is getting an iOS 7-compatible app and a new developer kit. Migicovsky also told Engadget that "it's working with partners like Foursquare, Yelp and GoPro to produce new apps for each."
The new Pebble iOS 7 app will allow users to enable their smartwatch to receive alerts from any apps with access to their Notification Center. This will allow anyone with a Pebble smartwatch to receive notifications from Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and so on. Previously users could only receive calls, texts or emails as notifications through their watch.
For those with motion sickness, iOS 7 can be cause problems. Apps zoom in and out of icons when launching or closing to the home screen, which might look sharp but is not to everyone's liking. Apple got the message that iOS 7 zooming isn't for everyone. The iOS 7.0.3 update makes it possible to switch off the zoom effect.
In order to turn off the app zoom, follow these steps:
1. Update to iOS 7.0.3 or later. For instructions on how to update iOS click here.
Apple quietly rolled out iOS 7.0.3 after the iPad Air event on Tuesday. The update brings back features like iCloud Keychain support, the ability to search Wikipedia from Spotlight and it fixes a few things like the accelerometer calibration issues. As you can see from the image posted below, Venture Beat has proved that Apple's fix has worked and "sensor-gate" should be over.
The image shows an iPhone 5 (the far phone) without 7.0.3 reading .2 degrees off level and an iPhone 5s (middle phone) with the iOS 7.0.3 fix reading .1 degrees of level. The nearest phone is an iPhone 5c which demonstrates the original sensor issue.
The iPhone 5s represents several firsts for Apple and the smartphone industry in general. Not only does the device feature 64-bit architecture, but the latest iPhone integrates a fingerprint sensor and independent M7 motion coprocessor. With new technology there's always the potential for bugs to surface after the latest hardware gets into the hands of users everywhere.
Of course the iPhone 5s is no different, and while reviews have been overwhelmingly positive some users have reported problems. Complaints and issues can always be brought to Apple's attention either in iPhone support communities or at the retail store Genius Bar. Besides troubleshooting, keep in mind the iPhone 5s comes with a one-year AppleCare warranty. Usually devices can be repaired or replaced in-store.
