Netflix and the TV app: Perfect together

TV app Netflix

When Apple's TV app was announced it promised to unify the viewing experience for streaming content across the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. Not only does TV make it possible to pick up a show exactly where you left off, but the app brings content from a variety of different apps and sources into a central place. Notably absent from TV at launch was Netflix, however this has all changed.

Hulu to support offline viewing in update

Hulu download feature iOS

Hulu subscribers may have already noticed a big upgrade to their iPhone and iPad apps. The latest update has brought individual user profiles, making it easier to separate preferences for the whole family. Apple device owners will soon enjoy another added feature: downloadable content for offline viewing. The move comes hot on the heels of competitor Netflix, which has already implemented the feature for certain licensed movies and shows.

How to rename your Apple TV

Apple TV default name in AirPlay

It may come as no surprise, but every Apple TV shows up as "Apple TV" by default once installed on a home network. This means when using AirPlay or Home Sharing, this name appears next to an Apple TV icon. For those with multiple Apple TV units or anyone who would prefer to customize the name of their device, tvOS provides an option to change its network name. Once the custom name has been configured, the new name will appear next to the Apple TV icon when connecting from an iPhone or Mac.

Developers can now offer app bundles up to 4 GB in size for Apple TV owners. Until Apple announced the change on its developer site, initial app downloads were limited to 200 MB. The change in policy means tvOS app binaries are now covered under the same 4 GB limit allowed for iOS apps. So what will this really mean to Apple TV fans who use the App Store?

How to disable automatic updates on Apple TV

By default, the fourth-generation Apple TV automatically installs updates to tvOS and any installed apps. Shortly after Apple releases a system update or an app developer's changes are approved by the App Store, the new versions roll out. Some users aren't a fan of this feature, as it can bring unwelcome changes to familiar apps. Others like to see if a firmware update is reported to cause any problems before they install it on their device. Here's where switching to manual updates on the Apple TV comes into play.
