Will the iPhone 4G be available on the Verizon Wireless network?

UPDATE: Verizon Wireless and Apple will launch the CDMA iPhone 4 on February 10, 2011 in stores. Existing Verizon customers can pre-order starting February 3, 2011.

Probably not. Rumors and speculation have been rampant on this issue. The fact is that Apple is launching the iPad with AT&T as its exclusive carrier. Clearly the two companies are in mutual agreement that their partnership is beneficial and ongoing.

Apple would have to manufacture the iPhone 4G to be compatible with two different network technologies if they wanted to bring the device to Verizon.

It's likely Apple will wait for the deployment of next generation wireless networks (LTE) which will be standard between all of the major carriers except for possibly Sprint. Apple could continue their business model of manufacturing one iPhone and it would be compatible on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon's networks.

LTE (long term evolution) is not expected to be widely available until 2011. We will keep you posted with the latest.

No. They could make 1 phone: A Verizon model.

Or... they could easily use that new chipset that works with 3-4 different carriers all in 1 phone.

To Kim's response.

Such a U.S. Centric response. Apple could make 1 phone, a Verizon model. You miss the point. Apple doesn't want/need to make more one model, and that's the one that's outselling all other handsets, you know WORLD compatible kind. Apple chose the form factor, and had design goals for WORLD domination, and they left out, purposely, the little wart on the WORLD domination thingy, called CDMA, which Verizon (and Sprint) in the U.S. has kept despite the evidence that it was a deadlocked legacy technology. To design CDMA in would require RADIO Transmitters, not just chipsets. If they did want a Verizon model, the user experience would not be the same handset, and while they might have more users with their handset, the company would have a supply chain and support complexity that they'd prefer not to deal with. They made a concious choice. Verizon CDMA is dead to them.
Verizon users can expect the choice for an Apple device when they have VOICE and DATA and a functioning next-generation GSM LTE network. This is 2 years plus for VOICE and DATA, LTE alone for data alone won't put the most desireable mass-market cellular Smartphone in the hands of Verizon customers. 2010 will come and go, no Apple iPhone on Verizon. 2011 maybe (51% chance), but my money would be 2012. To Anonymous's response:

CDMA is a deadlocked legacy technology? I think at this point, but CDMA and GSM are deadlocked technologies, considering the upcoming proliferation of LTE networks...

In any case, the basic tenet of GSM technology (time-division multiple access) far predates CDMA. Also note that the simultaneous voice and data capability did not exist in the first iPhone model (at launch). AT&T's EDGE network still cannot support simultaneous voice & data...

LTE is the 4th gen of GSM, so yes CDMA is dead. Yes, the first iPhone wasn't 3G ready, so it only did simul voice and data over WiFi.

So, in review, your post clears up the fact that CDMA is dead, and that Apple won't be coming to Verizon, until voice and data is available over the LTE platform. Verizon will get the iPad LTE (or whatever it's to be called) before they end up with the iPhone.
