How To Disable In-App Purchases

Stories of unsupervised kids racking up thousands of dollars worth of in-app purchases on their parent's credit cards are as old as the App Store, but no matter what Apple does the problem won't seem to go away. Recent headlines about a child buying $1,000 worth of digital donuts to feed Homer Simpson while playing an iOS game, have prompted the U.K.'s Office of Fair Trading to launch an investigation into apps targeting children. Who is ultimately responsible for these purchases is a matter of public debate, but here is how parents can protect themselves in the meantime.

Turn Off In-App Purchases

Here's how to disable in-app purchases on iOS devices: Navigate to Settings -> General -> Restrictions. You will be prompted to create a password if you haven't already done so (You'll have to enter it twice). Once your password is set, tap Enable Restrictions at the top of your screen. Scroll down to the Allowed Content section, and tap the In-App Purchases On/Off toggle.

PSA: T-Mobile iPhone Now Officially Available

Just a quick reminder, the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 are now officially available from T-Mobile. New and old T-Mobile customers can now buy an iPhone from retail stores and online at T-Mobile.com. Don't forget, the iPhone 5 from T-Mobile is sold at full price at $100 down plus 24 monthly installments of $20. The $20 payments are added on top of your monthly service charges. However, there is no annual contract, and the device is $70 less than buying an unlocked model directly from Apple.

T-Mobile iPhone

iPhones from T-Mobile are locked, meaning you will need T-Mobile to unlock the device if you decided to switch carriers. You will also be required to pay off any remaining balance for the device if you choose to stop using T-Mobile before the 24 months are over. The plus side of buying an unsubsidized phone is it allows you to upgrade your device at anytime, and you won't be locked into a two-year carrier contract.

How to Share iOS Notes to Facebook or Twitter

For heavy users of the built-in iOS Notes app, there are already some different ways to share notes. Besides using cut and paste to transfer notes to another app, tapping the share button provides two options for direct sharing: Messages and Mail. The jailbreak tweak ShareNotes changes all this, providing two additional ways to send iOS Notes directly to social media.

ShareNotes tweak Cydia iOS

Installing ShareNotes from Cydia will add Facebook and Twitter buttons to the share function of the Notes app. Tapping the appropriate button will create a message from your note text, just like sharing to these places with any other app.

How to Change the iOS Spotlight Background

Searching on the iPhone or iPad can be simplified with Spotlight, which provides a one-stop location to find various different items on your device. One thing that normally can't be changed is the look of the Spotlight background. Swiping to the right on the first home screen page will bring up the default Spotlight screen, which is opaque enough to obscure the home screen background.

Clear The Air tweak Cydia iOS

Those with jailbroken devices can now change this default look to reveal the background behind search results. The effect is achieved with a slider to change Spotlight screen transparency in the Settings once the tweak Clear The Air is installed from Cydia. Like many free tweaks, Clear The Air is a simple way to change one aspect of iOS.
