How can I get a silent ringtone on my iPhone?

One way to filter out unwanted calls is to assign a silent ringtone to specific contacts. Alternatively, you can assign a silent ringtone as the default ringtone and use normal ringtones for only contacts you want to hear.

The iPhone doesn't come with a silent ringtone. Here's how to add one:

1. Download a silent ringtone to your computer. Examples such as the silence ringtone or silent ring can be found online.

2. Open iTunes. Under LIBRARY on the left-hand menu in iTunes click Ringtones.

3. Copy the silent ringtone into Ringtones.

4. Connect your iPhone to the computer and sync. The silent ringtone will now appear in your list of ringtones and you can assign this ringtone to specific contacts.

Have tried this numerous times. I can download the silence ringtone to iTunes and it appears in the ringtones in iTunes, but after many attempts to sync, the ringtone does not move into my list of ringtones on the phone. Is it possible that you have to do something different for the 4S?

Try dragging the LIBRARY > Tones > SlientRing onto your DEVICE, worked for me?

Thanks!! That did it!

Check this...even more comfortable:

...no converting etc. Just a dollar on iTunes. I think it was worth it.

Provides silence & call selection. Be sure to download via iPhone so it will show up directly on your device.

I downloaded this directly on my iPhone for .99, but it does not show up in my list of ringtones when I try to assign it to a contact

Try and download the recommended iPhone link on silent-ringtone.com
It's a $1.29 and installs right away to your phone library. Works!

Works fine you just need to follow the instructions fully

I followed directions fully and it did not work. I followed the hint of another writer and dragged the Silent Ring onto the Device and IT WORKED!

Same thing happened to me. Select iPhone in iTunes. Then select Tones, the 4th one over at the top. THEN sync! That is what is missing for you I think. Good Luck! Seth

I tried the same thing but I don't see it on my iPhone. Was there something I did wrong?

Excellent - it worked for me on an Iphone 5

Roger: On your IPhone go to "Voice Memos". Here you can record a stretch of silence. I did mine for 15 seconds. Make sure you are in a quiet place.
The recording, on my phone, recorded as a "m4a" file. Once recorded I hit the button to right of the meter and then hit share. I emailed this to myself, downloaded it to my laptop desktop. Once on the desktop I changed the name of the file as my brother describes how in the next para graph:

Doug: iPhone ringtones are apparently M4R files, which is similar to an MPEG-4 file format. I would have thought that with your iPhone, you could record "nothing" (keep it less than 40 seconds though). That file may been recorded as an MPEG-4, MP4 or M4A file. You'll be able to tell by the file name extension (after the dot, e.g. a file named: nothing.mp4). Then, I think all you'll need to do is rename the file extension to m4r so that in our example is becomes nothing.m4r. Not sure if you can rename the file on your iPhone (I would assume so but I'm certainly not an iPhone aficiondao).

Roger: after renaming the file so it is an mr4 file, I had to go to the app store and download for free the "Rmaker" app (Ringtone Maker). Once that was all synced up I followed the instructions on this video.

I now have a silent ringtone that I made for free on my phone and have assigned it to the F-ing telemarketing numbers that keep calling at all hours.

Good luck!!
