iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 Not Getting Turn by Turn Navigation or 3D Maps

Apple promised a lot of new features for all iOS devices thanks to iOS 6, however, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 owners are being left out in the cold when it comes to the new Apple-developed Maps software. Pocket-Lint noticed some fine print foolery at the bottom of Apple's Maps page. It reads: “Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation will be available only on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later.”

There is more bad news for iPhone 3GS owners. The device will not be receiving VIP List, Flagged Smart mailboxes, FaceTime and Offline reading. It's safe to assume that the iPhone 3GS will be discontinued in the fall when Apple is expected to announce their next-generation smartphone. However, iPhone 4 owners may be feeling a little burned by iOS 6 after its release.

Pod2g: My iPhone 4 Running iOS 5.1 is Now Untethered [Jailbreak Update]

Corona developer pod2g tweeted a quick update about his iOS 5.1 jailbreaking progress. The iPhone developer wrote: "Heya! My iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 is now untethered." In April, pod2g announced that he had acquired all the exploits required to complete a new jailbreak. This latest announcement is good news since it shows that he has made some progress since we last checked in with him.

iOS 5.1 Jailbreak

iOS hackers have been busy working on a new exploit since the release of the iPad 3 in March. Dev Team member MuscleNerd and Chpwn both tweeted pictures of a jailbroken iPad 3 running Cydia 1.1.5 shortly after the tablet was released. However, Chpwn warned that a new jailbreak "could be months away from a public release."

New Jailbreak Tweak Brings Multitasking Gestures to the iPhone

iPhone developer chpwn has created a new iPhone tweak called Zephyr that brings multitasking gestures to the iPhone. Zephyr allows you to swipe up from the bottom of any screen to access a multitasking switcher filled with your apps. You can then switch between multiple apps by edge swiping like the iPad allows you to do.

Chpwn says this is the most efficient way to multitask on the iPhone, and that more gestures will be added through future updates. The idea for Zephyr came from a UI concept video created by Max Rudberg. Zephyr is available now through the Cydia jailbreak store for $2.99.

iPhone 4 Jailbreak Instructions (iOS 5.0.1 Redsn0w)

Thanks to pod2g and the iPhone Dev-Team it's now possible to jailbreak the iPhone 4 and all models of the Phone 3GS untethered. Although iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners are still waiting for an A5 jailbreak, all iOS devices running iOS 5.0.1 with A4 hardware can now be jailbroken untethered. This includes the original iPad, iPod touch 3G and iPod touch 4G.

Using redsn0w to jailbreak is a straightforward process, and will install the Cydia app store on your device. This opens up a whole new world of tweaks and apps to improve your iPhone experience and customize operation. Be sure that before you proceed with the instructions, you have installed the iOS 5.0.1 firmware update.
