Fring on iPhone 4 Supports Cross-Platform 3G Video Chat

Watch out Apple, Fring has FaceTime in its sights and has launched a new version compatible with iOS 4. What this means for owners of the latest iPhone is they are no longer restricted to Wi-Fi only video chatting. Not only does Fring enable 3G video chat, the company is offering their software for multiple smartphone platforms.

Unlike FaceTime, which only allows video chat between two people who both own the iPhone 4, Fring makes it possible to video chat with anyone running the software and with those running Skype. Currently Fring is available on Android and Symbian phones as well as iOS 4.

New Skype Allows 3G Calling on iPhone

Skype fans can finally rejoice as 3G cellular data calling has been added to the latest Skype iPhone app, version 2.0. The feature has been long-awaited by Skype users. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calling doesn't use up cellular plan minutes, although it does use data bandwidth.

Previously, Skype users were limited to making calls with the iPhone app on a Wi-Fi network. Several other apps have already added 3G VoIP support. Skype 2.0 is currently free of charge, although the company may start charging a monthly fee for 3G calls starting in 2011.

This will be a feature in the upcoming iPhone OS 4.0. When this firmware is released we will update with detailed instructions. In the meantime, those with jailbroken iPhones have been able to use folders for some time.

If you iPhone is already jailbroken, the application is called Categories (now version 2.99.6) and it's available on Cydia for free.

1. Open Cydia.
2. Touch the Sections menu at the bottom of the screen.
3. Choose System -> Categories -> Install.

Apple Adds Gift Feature to iPhone App Store

Next time you load up iTunes and enter the App Store, Apple will ask you to accept new terms and conditions. This happens pretty often, but the changes in question now include the ability to send "Gifts" of apps to your iPhone-toting friends and family.

Sending gifts with iTunes was previously limited to music and video only. The options when clicking on an iPhone app for purchase now read, Gift This App, Add to Wish List, Tell a Friend, Copy Link, Share on Facebook, Share on Twitter.
