How can I setup IMAP for GMail on my iPhone?

Google has recently added IMAP as an available protocol for their GMail. This is a long awaited feature for GMail users (not just GMail iPhone users) as it allows for true synchronization between GMail and offline mail readers.

UPDATE: Now iPhone users can simply choose "GMail" from the list of built-in accounts when adding a new email account. Navigate to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Add Account -> Gmail and enter your account Address and Password. Touch "Save" and it will connect automatically.

Old information follows:

Google has offered two sources of easy to follow instructions, a text version and a video, for setting up GMail reading via IMAP on the iPhone. Both are copied below:

GMail via IMAP on the Apple iPhone: Text Instructions

Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings.

Tap Settings.

Tap Mail.

Tap Add Account.

Tap Other. (Note: don't tap Gmail; if you do, you'll set up POP rather than IMAP. We are aware of this issue and are currently working to make setting up Gmail more intuitive for the iPhone.)

Make sure that:
The IMAP tab is highlighted

Host Name is imap.gmail.com

User Name is your full Gmail address, including '@gmail.com'

For Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), Host Name is smtp.gmail.com

Tap Save.

And you're done. You can verify your Advanced settings by tapping Settings > [your Gmail IMAP Account] > Advanced.

Incoming Settings
Use SSL: ON
Authentication: password
Server Port: 993

Outgoing Settings
Use SSL: ON
Authentication: Password
Server Port: 587

I have ATT for my email and it is a popp.att.yahoo.com for incoming email. But i cant sync my email folders over to my iphone because its a pop not a IMAP is this correct? I only have a trash,sent and inbox on my iphone and would like more can you help?

And what do you do after it tries to verify and you get "Can't connect with SSL. Try without?" I've tried both "yes" and "no". Then I get "The IMAP server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding."

Non-standard IMAP Port.

There is a problem with this, if your ISP uses a port other the 993 for the IMAP port number.
The work around is to set the phone into Airplane mode, then configure IMAP - ignore verification warnings, re-edit, change the port, the trun airplane mode back on.

did not work for my iphone 4s, no matter how the imap is set it cannot find the server. POP does not work either, had to download third party gmail app.

GUYS.. ITS TOO EASY.

IF U ARE GETTING ERROR MESSAGE REGARDING YOUR PASSWORD OR USER ID, SIMPLY GO TO UR PC THEN LOGIN WITH UR GMAIL ID.

1- IN UR GMAIL ACCOUNT TAP ACCOUNT (AN HIDDEN OPTION JUST BELOW UR NAME ON TOP RIGHT CORNER)

2- IN ACCOUNT TAP SECURITY OPTION

3- TAP - App passwords Settings

4- IT WILL AGAIN ASK UR PASSWORD, SO ENTER THAT

5- AFTER SECOND LOGIN TAP - Generate Password

6- NOW IN UR IPHONE, JUST PUT THIS 16 CHARACTER PASSWORD IN PASSWORD FIELD.

7- THAT'S IT... U WILL SEE THAT UR GMAIL ACCOUNT HAS BEEN CONFIGURED IN UR IPHONE.

When i try to make my gMail account i provide everything right but it say your user name or password is wrong
Host name- imap.gmail.com
In user name- aayusharora071@gmail.com
Then i enter my paasword

In outgoing
Host name smtp.gmail.com
And all same after that
What is wrong in it
