Apple Weekly News Roundup: Pangu Releases iOS 8 Jailbreak, Office Updated for iPhone, and More

The biggest news of last week (well actually the previous Friday) was Pangu's release of a jailbreak for iOS 8. If you had a jailbroken iOS 7 iPhone or iPad, now you can get back all of your favorite tweaks, as it is fully integrated with Cydia as of Thursday. If you plan to jailbreak, now is the time, as Apple released iOS 8.1.1 beta on Monday, which includes a patch that blocks the jailbreak.

A mysterious Apple webcrawler was discovered last week by developer Jan Moesson. The bot can be traced back to October 15th, and it seems to only request HTML pages. Its purpose is currently unknown, but there has been speculation that it has to do with improving Spotlight.

On Thursday, Microsoft announced that its Office apps for iPad have been updated with iPhone and Dropbox support. Users can also download Word, Excel and Powerpoint for free, without a subscription to Office 365.

A new rumor from Taiwan emerged last week claiming that one of Apple's supply partners, TPK, is working on a 3D display for Apple's next generation iPhone. It supposedly would not require special eyewear.

Apple has a history of opening early on Black Friday and, according to people in the know, Apple stores will open at 8:00 AM this year. This isn't as early as years past, but still an hour or two earlier than the brick-and-mortar stores typically open.

Another rumor that emerged last week points to Valentine's Day as the official release date for the Apple Watch. The source also says there will be a $500 stainless steel model and a $4,000 - $5,000 gold edition, plus several more in between models.
