Apple Releases iOS 4.3.1 Security and Maintenance Update

The latest firmware from Apple is already here. Just over two weeks after the release of iOS 4.3 for GSM iPhones, Apple has added bug fixes and other minor updates to iOS 4.3.1. The update was made available on iTunes earlier than expected. Verizon iPhones (CDMA) will remain at iOS 4.2.6 for the time being.

This update is also designed for the iPad, iPad 2 and fourth generation iPod touch. Although the update is relatively minor, if you are one of the users affected by issues addressed in the update you'll want to install the new firmware right away.

Apple Highlights Ringtone Purchasing in iOS 4.3

Need a ringtone on the fly? If you don't mind spending money for a 30-second ringtone, Apple has you covered in iTunes. The latest iOS 4.3 release is the gold master and this firmware brings ringtone purchasing to the foreground. The update will be available to AT&T iPhone users starting on March 11, 2011.

Currently if you're interested in buying a ringtone from Apple, you have to find the ringtone collection within the iTunes app. To navigate there now and preview ringtones you must open the iTunes app, select More from the bottom menu and choose Ringtones. Not difficult, however many iPhone users forget the feature is even an option.

Can I update to iOS 4.3 firmware on the iPhone 3G?

No. Apple is officially leaving the iPhone 3G behind to run iOS 4.2.1 firmware forever. No more updates for the iPhone 3G will be forthcoming.

If you haven't updated to iOS 4.2.1 on your iPhone 3G you can find iPhone 3G firmware files here. The iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 (AT&T only) will support iOS 4.3.

Will Apple release iOS 4.3 for the Verizon iPhone 4?

This is currently unknown. Apple stated that iOS 4.3 will be released on March 11, 2011 for GSM iPhones (meaning AT&T Mobility hardware only).

The Verizon iPhone 4 shipped with iOS 4.2.6, while AT&T iPhones were last updated with iOS 4.2.1. It remains to be seen whether or not Apple will update Verizon firmware in the near future. We will share the latest information on the subject as soon as it becomes available.

What is the release date for the iPhone iOS 4.3 firmware update?

UPDATE: iOS 4.3 was released ahead of schedule on Wednesday March 9, 2011.

Apple will release iOS 4.3 for GSM iPhones (AT&T only) on Friday March 11, 2011.

The firmware update will be available for free via iTunes. This operating system update will add features including Personal Hotspot and iTunes Home Sharing. There are also improvements coming to AirPlay and Safari with iOS 4.3.
