Out of the box, the GSM version of the Apple iPhone (up to the iPhone 4) and the iPhone 4S will only work on Apple approved GSM providers (i.e. AT&T).
T-Mobile SIM cards can be used in an iPhone that has been jailbroken and unlocked via third party software. There are a variety of commercial and non-commercial software options available which unlock the iPhone.
Apple and AT&T (formerly Cingular) have signed a five year exclusivity agreement.
If you're on another American carrier, you'll have to wait for an unlocked version of the IPhone to come along, or wait 5 years.
The iPhone will be available for other networks in Europe starting Q4 2007.

Last week, direct comments from Microsoft executives termed the iPhone as "irrelevant" and unfit for business. For most of us, this was almost like stating the obvious. The iPhone is a multimedia device targeted towards a youthful market of music-driven iPod users, loaded with entertainment oriented features. The idea that Blackberry or Treo users wouldn't be replacing their devices with an iPhone sort of seemed like common sense.
