Is Apple iCloud data encrypted?

Is my data safe on Apple's iCloud servers? Does Apple encrypt personal data stored on iCloud? Which files are encrypted on iCloud?

iCloud credentials

Apple provides in-depth information about its stance on privacy, including details on iCloud encryption. All iCloud content is encrypted when it's transferred, and the following items are encrypted while stored on Apple or third-party servers:

  • Photos
  • Documents
  • Calendars
  • Contacts
  • iCloud Keychain
  • Backup
  • Bookmarks
  • Reminders
  • Find My iPhone
  • Find My Friends
  • Notes

Mail is encrypted in transit between iCloud mail servers and whatever email app you use to access your mail.

Apple does not share encryption keys with third-party vendors, and in Apple data centers while Apple holds the encryption keys to provide services such as syncing and backups, Apple cannot read passwords or payment information stored in iCloud Keychain.
