Can I unlock an iPhone backup if I forgot the password?
iTunes makes it possible to encrypt iPhone backups when syncing your device. Fortunately for security purposes this backup is protected by a password.
Unfortunately, if you forget this password the iPhone backup cannot be unlocked. In this case, the iPhone can't be restored from the encrypted backup.

You can remove the passcode by restoring your device from iTunes or Find My iPhone if you turned it on before. The catch here is that you will lost your data by applying above method, so you should be aware of that.
If you don't want any data loss, then you should recover your iPhone data before restoring your device.

iTunes backup password is different from that you use to login Apple account or iCloud. And if you forgot it, you may never find it back unless you keep trying all possible characters combination to unlock it. You can manually type to test whether your combination is correct. Or you can google some "Top iPhone Backup Unlocker" apps to help you automatically try every possible combination to recover your password.

If you forgot the password, the only way to reset it is to find it firstly.
You can use software like iTunes Password Rescuer to find the forgotten password: http://goo.gl/GVAAEw

Brute force is possible to crack the password unless:
The password is week. According to my test, it took 8 hours to break a password with 6 pure digits.
The Computer should have a high profile especially for GPU.
The backup made by lower version of iTunes has more possibilities for breaking.
Edit: Here is a step by step guide to unlock iTunes backup password in response to the comment.

iCloud use the same login credentials as Apple ID. However, it's different from iTunes backup password, which you can't get them backup by calling Apple Support. Instead, you need to figure out it by yourself or a program. Here is a step by step guide on how to unlock forgotten iTunes backup password with UUkeys: http://www.uukeys.com/forgot-itunes-backup-file-password.html

If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device.
Or if you doesn't want to lost your data, I think you can try professional iTunes backup password recovery program - iSeePassword iTunes Backup Recovery tool. it can unlock your password of iTunes backup.

Hey, i had the same problem. I have a 4th gen iPod Touch and i went to download the latest software. I came back a few hours later and i found that when i turned my iPod on, it just told me to plug it into iTunes. Then it said it could restore the backup i had made the day before, but i needed a password. Try the password for your Apple account but that didn't work for me.
I try a password recovery tool - iSeePassword iTunes backup password recovery tool to recover my forgotten password, it works, yes, it really works fine. Only 5 minutes required, I get back my password. Thanks, iSeePassword team!

If you forgot your password for itunes encrypted backup, you can recover it with the software - iTunesKey.
If you have no luck, the only thing you can do is to delete the encrypted backup and create a new backup.

I just tried your email password idea, after my company help desk came up empty handed, and I had tried every other PW I could think of. It worked! Same story, I have no memory of setting this up, and I would not have used my email PW if I had. Pretty creepy if you ask me!

You might have failed after tested many possible password, you can try iTunes Password Tuner(just google it). If the password is not longer than 3 characters, the free trial-version can help you recover the password, if the password is longer than 3 characters, you need to buy a registration code, not expensive, cheaper than others, only US19.95.
