iPhone Firmware 2.2 Release Coming Friday

Three more days until the latest iPhone software release. Ever since the September release of firmware 2.1 there has been speculation of what features might be added to 2.2. Confirmed improvements mostly revolve around the maps application, including pedestrian and Google Transit directions, Street View, and location sharing.

Firmware 2.2 also includes improvements to the MobileSafari browser, support for audio input from third-party devices, and over-the-air (OTA) podcasts. Downloads of audio or video podcasts will be limited to 10MB file sizes when using 3G or EDGE, similar to app store downloads.

Looks like iPhone users and developers seeking push notification services or copy and paste functionality will continue to wait for Apple to oblige.

On another note, when we last heard from the iPhone-dev team they had already jailbroken and unlocked firmware 2.2 beta 2 (Timberline). Nonetheless, they have issued a warning against updating to 2.2 until further notice. The latest post reads:

Installing ‘2.2’ straight away on the iPhone 3G using the iTunes auto-updater could affect your chances of any software unlock in the near future (should one be found and released), so when you see an update in iTunes await our instructions first!

YES IT WILL !!!! Upgrading your 1st Gen iPhone to firmware 2.2 will lock your phone again. Unlocking it is not that difficult thoug. I used QuickPwn to unlock it again.

I waited a long time this!!
