Apple is working on a new operating system, designed entirely for use on augmented reality (AR) hardware. rOS will reportedly launch in 2020 on an AR headset designed by Apple.
rOS is otherwise known as the Reality Operating System from Apple.
Apple delivered ARKit to developers with iOS 11, enabling enhanced AR capabilities for apps. The company has invested heavily in AR and recently acquired Totem headset developer Vrvana.rOS is the name of the operating system developed for Apple's upcoming AR headset or AR glasses. rOS is based on iOS, however it will be optimized to take advantage of a custom system-on-a-chip (SOC) designed for AR applications. Apple's display hardware and gesture detection components will be integrated with rOS running the show.
