Sounds and Ringtones

Much like with ringtones, you can make sure you always know who sent a text by assigning text tones to contacts. To assign a text tone other than the default text tone to a contact follow these instructions:

1. Open your Contacts.
2. Select the name of the contact you wish to customize.
3. Touch the Edit button in the upper right corner of the screen. Scroll down and select text tone.
4. Choose the desired text tone from the list. The text tone will play.
5. Press the Save button.

Sometimes the ring/silent switch on the side of the iPhone starts malfunctioning. When this iPhone mute button no longer works, you may think the device is set to silent but then it rings at the worst time possible. How can you fix this broken switch?

First of all, if your iPhone is covered under warranty or Apple Care, take the device to Apple for service. You can check the current warranty status of your iPhone online.

One way to filter out unwanted calls is to assign a silent ringtone to specific contacts. Alternatively, you can assign a silent ringtone as the default ringtone and use normal ringtones for only contacts you want to hear.

The iPhone doesn't come with a silent ringtone. Here's how to add one:

1. Download a silent ringtone to your computer. Examples such as the silence ringtone or silent ring can be found online.

You can make custom ringtones from files in your iTunes library without using any additional software. Follow these instructions:

These instructions were tested using iTunes 9.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 and may vary depending on the version of iTunes and operating system you are running on your computer.

1. Choose the song you'd like to use for your custom ringtone.
2. Make a note of the beginning and ending time (this can be no longer than 40 seconds).
3. Right-click on the song you want to use for your ringtone and select Get Info.
4. Click the Options tab.
