The latest firmware update released by Apple may have improved security and added features, but some iPhone owners are having problems. Reports from users on the Apple support forums indicate a major problem with updating to iPhone OS 3.1 on the iPhone 3G.
Users are ending up with bricked phones, and iPhones that crash several times, requiring a hard reboot. Holding the sleep and home button doesn't always work, however. Some users are finding it necessary to downgrade to iTunes 8 and firmware 3.0.1 to solve the problems.
Other problems turning up include much shorter battery life, and podcasts suddenly being listed in random order instead of sorted by date.
Original iPhone and iPhone 3G enterprise users are reporting even more problems. Neither device officially supports Exchange encryption, unlike the 3GS. Apple did not actually enforce encryption policies on any iPhone devices until iPhone OS 3.1.
In other words, Apple is finally in compliance with the Exchange encryption standards introduced in 2007, and those people without an iPhone 3GS are out of luck. That is, unless their IT administrators disable the Exchange encryption policy. Some users are opting to downgrade to iPhone OS 3.0.1 to solve the problems (see these instructions). In some cases, a downgrade to iTunes 8 or iTunes 7.7 will also help until Apple releases bug fixes (more help in this FAQ).

I updated to iPhone OS 3.1 yesterday and the phone goes dead by it self. Then it awakes after a few minutes..... works fine ....and again goes dead after a few hours.
Further, while its dead, if i ring my number from another mobile the ring goes through....but when the phone awakes....there is no missed call.
I am just trying to restore the phone back to 3.0.1 (https://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/97663)
and hope the same works

Tried to restore to 3.0.1 as well as 3.0 ...but failed every time....I get the ERROR 1015...and then I have to restore the phone back to 3.1and complete the sync....a good 2hr job till all the files are copied.
Checked the error with the apple web site ...the site (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275) states
"Error 1015" is typically caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone or iPod touch software available from Apple."
Apple...if ur hearing us...please release the next version quick

Help please.
I took 12 pictures with the iphone camera. I was in the process of sending these pictures to myself - to estore them in my pc.
I phone has gone completely dead. {and I know the battery has plenty of juice].
Same think happened to my husbands phone after also sending pics.
Q:? How to get the device to 'wake-up'?
Will it still have pics and contact info? any help will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Can not restore my phone after attempting to upgrade 3GS to 3.1. Dead.
My wife is reporting major problems after the upgrade: slow, google maps crashing, etc...
Nick replied on Permalink
Hey,
I had the same problems just now with my 3g. I have restored my iphone back to 3.0.1.
Here's how I sorted it;
(If you have upgraded itunes from 8 to itunes 9 like I just did, make sure you restart your computer first!)
Download the 3.0.1 firmware from here -
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6974.20090731.Cf4Tg/iPhone1,1_3.0.1_7A400_Restore.ipsw
1. Start itunes without iphone connected.
2. If you have your iphone running through a dock or cradle, take it out. Disconnect the usb cable from the usb port in your computer. Now reconnect the usb cable into a different usb port and then plug the usb cable directly into the iphone without going through the dock or cradle.
3. It should say that itunes has detected a phone in recovery mode or something like that and needs to be restored. Click Ok.
4. Now hold down 'shift'(pc) or 'option' (mac) while you click restore. Now you should have the option to select the firmware you just downloaded. Navigate to where you saved the file on your hard drive and select it.
This is what I did and it worked. Restored my iphone and then reinstalled 3.0.1.
Hope it works for you 2!
Nick.

Thanks, Nick! You saved the day. Both my and my husband's phone got stuck in the restore mode while upgrading to 3.1. Very frustrating! Your directions worked perfectly.

Nick, this doesn't seem to work for me. Option + Restore just brings up a window saying that everything will be erased... No options. I restored to factory settings, but then when I plug it back in it gives me the option to go back to my backed up vertio (which I did prior to the restore) of as a new iPhone.
Am I missing something?

I updated my phone on Thursday and since has had problems with it shutting down. I then have to get the apple icon to appear and once I leave it sit for about 5 mins it reboots itself. I have had to totally restore my phone twice though now. I hate this. I hope they figure out this problem soon!!!!

My iPhone 3gs failed when updating to 3.1, error 1602. Then later when I tried to restore it from recover mode it gave error 1604. I tried 3 times and I even completely removed iTunes, etc from my pc then reinstalled it an it still didn’t work!
In the end I used my other computer, installed iTunes 9, Downloaded the 3.1 software again and it finally worked!!!! I simply connect back to my normal pc and sync my iPhone with my previous backup. Took a few hours but I got there in the end, it’s been a few days now and I have had no problems at all, thankfully.
I hope this helps anyone having problems.

Two days ago downloaded 3.1. Hours latter phone went black. Came back by itself few minutes latter. Listining to ipod phone stops gose black. Pushed off button nothing happened. Pushed on off button few more times phone went on. Woke up next morning phone was dead. Pushed on off button time after time nothing happend, five minutes latter phone was on by it’s self. Looked for answers on web should of looked at commments before loading 3.1, will do from now on. Was told allot of people having same problem. Was told to go to a sight and download 3.0. Plug phone into compurter open itunes, open up summery page on my pc hold down shift key and hit restore. Go to 3.0 in my file and it will load into iphone. Process started got half way through go an errror message can’t continue for what ever reason. Hit ok. Process stopped in the software verson showed n/a. Hit restore button as last resort. It erased the whole phone reloaded new 3.1 upgrade then reloade all of my information from my computer file. Phone started up phone is working great just like before. No problems now for 48 hours. Didn’t plan on doing a complete restore just trying to get back to 3.0 but it wouldn’t let me do it. It downloaded 3.1 again. Maybe by clearing everything out of the phone and starting out like a new phone it fixed the problem.Maybe I just got lucky but the phone is working, and it’s been two days now. It may be worth trying to do the same. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Like everyone, for the past 3 days my phone hae completely shutted down on me like 3 times ever since I updated to 3.1... There are also times where my phone won't work and then 10 min later it will work again. This is not as bad as before when the phone would be dead and will only work when the battery tells you to charge. I went to the app store and they told me to restart my phone. I did that and I'm experiencing the same problems.

I wanted to update the software on my iphone because I heard that MMS is now enabled. Itunes forced me to restore my phone, created an error (an unknown one). One of the Apple solutions to this problem was to download itunes on another computer. This did allow me to restore my iphone, but I am so frustrated because I had no issues with my phone at all before updating the newest software today 9/30/09. Now my iphone has NONE of my settings, my contacts, my emails (I had three set accounts) and now I have to re-do everything. Before today I had no problems with the phone. WHY does this happen?????? I want to vent to Apple!

iPhone 32G 3GS.
After update to 3.1, the phone loses the ability to use the phone part whenever I sync it to the Mac PB G4 (updating music or just charging it). It won't accept or make calls unless I power the phone off first and then back on. Internet works fine though.

3.1 what a piece of garbage! My wife doesn't sync or update her phone often so she didn't get the 3.1 update and her phone has no issues. My phone on the other hand won't last half a day on a charge even when I've cut back use to basic iPod and alerts off and no email client configured. Definitely looking for a fix from Apple and back to 3.0.1 I go as soon as possible. Think some of the crack developers from the Microsoft ME days moved over to Apple?

This started happening to me too and I thought my phone was failing. Went through all the troubleshooting independently before calling support and arranging an appointment with the Apple Store. They replaced the phone and I thought I was in the clear... except it started happening again literally the very next day.
This isn't cool.

Purchased new apps on iPhone; went to sync with comp but phone froze up and had to restore. After restoring iPhone...the new apps (not synced to computer) where gone. Shortly there after I cracked iPhone screen...iPhone still works but cannot get new apps back on phone...all apps that where synced to comp are and can be restored back to iPhone it's just the new ones not showing anywhere in apps tab or phone. Now I have new 3GS & uploaded apps from comp stored in iTunes but since old phone never synced to store new apps I can't figure out how to get new apps I purchased.
Contact Apple to get credit then repurchase???
Is there a place in iTunes to get new apps reloaded other than where apps are stored iTunes??(they are not there);
Any other suggestions???
In recent activity log in profile it shows history if purchases but no button to reload if lost...can I just go into app store and "re-purchase" and will iTunes re-download for free because it recognizes purchase has been made????
About ten new apps lost...$30. Not neccissarily money but principle and frustration that there is no obvious way to get apps that have been purchased even when log shows I bought them!!!
Any help???

I'm the guy who lost apps when syncing and then restoring after phone froze up; well I decided to try and just "purchase" the same apps lost and since iTunes (apps store) already had record of each purchase I was given a prompt saying i could reinstall for free; I clicked on yes; had to do it for each one but I got all apps back at no cost and was simple...
For those who have lost apps under any circumstance, I would go to (lost) app as if you were to purchase; and reinstall. You should be prompted with dialogue box that you already purchased before iTunes does anything so that IF there is a fee (but for all I've seen you shouldn't) you will be able to cancel before having any additional costs.
Hope this helps some of you...it can be frustrating to say the least!
