iPhone 3.1.3: The Battery Fix We've Been Waiting For?

Apple has made the iPhone OS 3.1.3 update (7E18) available and as usual users can update their iPhones and iPod Touch devices via iTunes. The list of bug fixes and security improvements includes this item: Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS.

Could this mean that users plagued with widely reported battery problems have finally received a fix from Apple? Ever since the 3.1 update, some users have complained of drastically shortened battery life on iPhone 3GS models. Maybe the meter is the problem- we will keep you posted.

Other bug fixes include a resolution for issues involving third-party apps crashing on launch and app crashes that occur when using the Japanese Kana keyboard.

Even more important are the numerous security issues that are fixed with the release of 3.1.3. All of the following have been discovered and resolved:

- Playing a maliciously crafted mp4 audio file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
- Viewing a maliciously crafted TIFF image may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
- A person with physical access to a locked device may be able to access the user’s data
- Accessing a maliciously crafted FTP server could result in an unexpected application termination, information disclosure, or arbitrary code execution
- Mail may load remote audio and video content when remote image loading is disabled

As always, those with jailbroken devices should wait for the all clear before updating firmware.

Update: Users are reporting continued battery problems and other issues after updating to 3.1.3 firmware. Take these steps to maximize your iPhone battery life.

Hi,can anyone tell me if the iphone satnav will work in the usa?

Anyone having problems with 3.1.3? I installed it yesterday and my phone has crashed five times, all while not running any third party apps. I have one Exchange and one Gmail account set up, perhaps it is in that part of the code base?

Mine has to. It's all been during texting tho. I had a crash were it put up an error box like when an app crashes on your computer than it locked up on the apple screen. All my attempts to reboot or reset it did not work. As I was about to go to the Apple store I got a text and it all seemed to go back to normal. I also got a crash when I got a text and the whole phone just rebooted on me. Iv'e also seen some problems with my phone working with my car stereo. Iv'e had an Iphone since the first week they launched. I ye have a 3gs and have never seen these typs of problems before.

Ever since I updated to 3.1.3 my battery life has shortened dramatically. Before I could go all day without recharging now I need to recharge ~3 times a day. I have tried power cycling, turning off wifi and disabling all but 1 email account. Nothing has made any difference. Anybody else having this issue?

Absolutely! I turned off wi-fi and I could visibly see my battery meter decreasing as I watched it.

Definitely happening to me. Since the update I can't keep the thing charged. Comment above is spot-on, you can watch the battery dying. 3.1.4 should be another day or so lol

Same problem here. Before the update I can use my phone allday. Now I have to charge it 2x a day.

I fixed the battery issue with my iPhone. I had the same problem having to charge my iPhone twice a day but I fixed it. Here's what I did:

1. Run the iPhone battery down till it is completely dead and the iPhone shuts down by itself. Leave it for another few hours so the battery is dead, dead, dead. I left mine overnight.
2. Using the wall charger plug it in and let it fully charge. Don't use it unless you must.
3. Once fully charged go to "Settings" --> "General" --> "Usage" and make sure 'Usage' and 'Standby' have reset to zero. You can google battery charging iPhone tips for more info on what this means.
4. Use it normally. The battery will hopefully last. Mine went 4:52min usage and 23:49 standby after I did this.
5. Hope this helps.
