What happened to double-click home button shortcuts in iOS 4 (camera / favorites)?

The option under Settings -> General -> Home to add shortcuts to the home button has been removed in iOS 4 (iPhone OS 4). Double clicking the home button now opens the multitasking bar.

Users previously had the option to directly access iPod, Camera, Phone Favorites or Search by clicking the home button twice.

Triple-click options for the iPhone home button can be set under Settings -> General -> Accessibility and include features such as Zoom, Large Text, and White on Black.

Yeah I really miss the double click to favorites.

I used this feature all the time and never dreamed that it would be left out of iOS4.

There were rumors that double-click and hold (holding the second click) would still bring up the Phone Favorites, but apparently that idea was scrapped because it doesn't seem to be working.

oh why did they have to change it, used the double click all the time it was much easier didnt even have to look at phone :(

you can double click the home button then scroll left for music controls.

oh my god, thanks so much! Your comment helped me a lot because I was going absolutely CRAZY! (Because I used to use the double-click feature to access my music while I'm playing my games.

Thanks a lot! Seriously! :D

Do you not realise the new double click feature can perform exactly the same function? Multitasking?? Sound familiar?

Thanks. I like the music button better. Great help.

thanks mate! you're the man

Thank you so much. I've been trying to figure this out since I had to upgrade from the 3G.

This may help?

I had my double-click settings set to iPod control when the 3GS was under OS 3.1.3 (or whatever it was before upgrading to 4)

Now, when my phone is open (not locked) double click acts as I suspected it would - bringing up the multi-task bar - on which I can swipe left for running apps and swipe right for iPod controls.

I do notice that when the phone is locked, double-click brings up the option to unlock, or, double click again, brings up the iPod controls as it did under OS 3.1.3...

Quation for all: Maybe whatever the setting was 'before you upgraded' hangs around, but only when the phone is locked?

Unfortunately not. The iPhone has always had a double click feature when locked to pop up the iPod controls.

Annoyed I used that for the camera. How do you downgrade the phone? Can't stand OS 4 because of this.

Really miss the double click for camera, I used it all day for work. I'm sorry I updated.

Why do they remove such a nice feature.
I am rolling back immediately. That sucks.

I'm experienting a different behavior. I don't know if this was added in the latest update.

- Double click on the Home button if iPhone is lock brings the iPod console.
- If the iPhone is unlocked, the dblClick open a pseudo task bar with the 4 previous applications used.

Not only am I bummed about no double-click to my phone favorites, I can't even find my phone favorites! I see the stars on the individual contacts, but I can't figure out how to access them easily.

...just click the green 'phone' app button and 'favorites' appears in the bottom left ;)

geezus ive been trying to figure this out for 3 days lol... i appreciate it!

This is crazy. I really miss this feature.

It's still primarily a phone.

95% of the time I take it out of my pocket I want to call someone, and it was

1. Unlock
2. Double tap
3. Tap

To make a call.

Now it's

1. Unlock
2. Tap phone
3. Tap favourites
4. Tap contact.

An extra tap for 90% of the time I use it. That multitasking is kinda stupid anyway, just to please the windows freaks that don't understand good design. Why would you want to run 4 apps at a time anyway? The screen is only 3 " big!

"Windows freaks"? Can't say I've met any. But I have seen plenty of rabid apple fan boys and girls.

Multitasking was more likely added to catch up with other mobile devices that already offer it. Your Mac also multitasks - when it's not too busy being pretentious.

"Don't understand good design"? In what way is the increasingly user-unfriendly, unclear and unintuitive iOS good design? When you buy apple producta you're paying extra for a nice skin and what you think is license to tell people you understand good design. But it's a load of nonsense because much of the time that skin and interface requires as much training and explanation and hunting around in forums as Windows or any other OS.

Apple products are not better. They are just different.

I also miss the double click to open camera btw.

Agree with you totally (although I do think the OS X unix core is far more robust than any Windows variant I've used).

Ironic that Apple users propagate this meme about "Windows freaks" yet they are perfectly happy to let Apple dictate to the them how they will use their data (never mind the nightmare developers -- those whose apps hint at moving data in a way that Apple can not control -- have to go through if they want Apple approval).

btw, if i'm many screens away from the camera icon, I slowly double click the power button which brings up the lock screen. From there I swipe up the locked-screen-camera icon & I'm there. On the other hand, the following won't work unless you use the regular screen camera icon: you can use the double-click (even from the camera app) to get you back to the app you were previously in before interrupted by the photo shoot -- except of course, those haters of multitasking. They're not allowed to do that.

Just sent this & it didn't go through. Apologies if it gets double posted

It's gone!..but I really wanted that feature!

Just download Activator and u can set the double click to go where ever u want, and loads of other shortcuts ;)

tell me more about Activator, I can't find it.

Activator is a jailbroken app, and is a must have for all jailbreakers (like SBsettings and winterboard). It allows you to change shortcuts for apps and other options. For example, TO GET THE MUSIC CONTROLS AT DOUBLE TAP, you got to settings>activator>anywhere>double tap home button>ipod controls. TO GET THE IPHONE FAVORITES, its a bit more complicated. First you have to download Smartdial from cydia, which lets you change which page (favorites, dialer, history) the phone app opens with. Go to smartdial settings and make it so that the phone app opens with favorites every time. Then go to settings>activator>anywhere>double tap home button>phone app. i think a better way to do this would be to make an app that creates a shortcut to the phone favorites, and then use activator to open the app when you double click the home button.
