What is the iPhone 5 release date?

Apple has released a new iPhone every summer since the original iPhone launched in 2007, with the exception of the iPhone 4S. Here are first release dates for each model:

Original iPhone: Friday June 29, 2007
iPhone 3G: Friday July 11, 2008
iPhone 3GS: Friday June 19, 2009
iPhone 4: Thursday June 24, 2010
iPhone 4S: Friday October 14, 2011

Should Apple release the iPhone 5 during summer on a Thursday or Friday, we can expect the iPhone 5 to launch on June 28 or 29, 2012. This could happen a week earlier or later.

In contrast, Apple may have already decided to keep its changed iPhone update cycle from 2011. Now that the Verizon, AT&T and Sprint iPhone 4S have all launched on the same date, it's likely the iPhone 5 will also launch across all carriers at the same time.

This puts the iPhone 5 release date in the vicinity of late September or sometime in October 2012, which coincides with the beginning of Apple's 2013 fiscal year. Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE: Recent reports put the iPhone 5 release date on Friday, September 21. Apple's announcement is rumored to be on Wednesday, September 12, with pre-orders going live the same day.
