DevTeam Issues Warning about Upgrading to iPhone OS 2.0.1

The announcement regarding the new version (2.0.2) of the iPhone Pwnage tool, which is presumably just hours away, brought with it the news that it would not contain an unlock for the new iPhone 3G. The DevTeam, however, has indicated they are still hard at work on developing an unlock for the new iPhone's 3G/GSM baseband and given their long record of success, one can only assume it is only a matter of time before the 3G unlock arrives.

That said, in their announcement regarding Pwnage 2.0.2, the DevTeam issued a warning to potential unlockers interested in updating to iPhone OS 2.0.1. According to the DevTeam, those who hope to acheive an unlock of their iPhone 3G should avoid using iTunes to perform a standard upgrade from OS 2.0 to 2.0.1. Though the reasons for this are not provided in detail, suffice it to say that doing otherwise may prevent iPhone 3Gs from future unlocks.

Specifically, the DevTeam states:

Warning: If you care about the possibility of a GSM/3G unlock in the future (there is no unlock available as yet), do not update your 3G device with iTunes unless you do it via PwnageTool 2.0.2 (this means you’ll need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool 2.0.2 and install it using iTunes) - If you have updated over the last few days with iTunes, you’ll still be able to Jailbreak using PwnageTool 2.0.2 but it may reduce the chance of you being able to unlock the Phone to be able to use a SIM card from all carriers in the future.

Again, the details are lacking. Hope is evidently not lost for phones that have been updated via iTunes, and not Pwnage, to 2.0.1 -- but aspiring unlockers may be disappointed to hear their chances may be reduced. Additionally, it is unclear whether this reduction in the likelihood of unlocking applies to all or just certain GSM carriers.

Assuredly, there is more to come.
