How do I use multitasking on an iPhone with iOS 4 / iPhone OS 4?

Multitasking capability has arrived with iOS 4. Users with an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 who have the latest firmware installed can access the feature.

Any apps can run in the background. For multitasking features such as background music to work, the application running in the background must be updated to take advantage of the capabilities Apple has added to iOS 4.

To use multitasking:

1. Run an app.
2. Press the home button. Instead of quitting the app will run in the background (apps without background support will quit).
3. At any time, double press the home button.

Update Your iPhone Firmware to iOS 4 Today

iPhone 3GS and 3G owners are expecting the iPhone OS 4 release from Apple today. Renamed iOS 4, the new firmware adds 100 new features including multitasking, folders and more. Apple watchers are predicting that the company will make the update available on its servers by 10 am Pacific time (1 pm EDT).

Demand is sure to be high as millions of devices, including the iPod Touch, are eligible to receive the operating system upgrade for free. Users will certainly flood Apple's servers with requests, much like the iPhone 4 pre-order swamped AT&T and Apple. iOS 4 requires iTunes 9.2.

iPhone 4: Everything You Need to Know

Steve Jobs officially showed off the iPhone 4 today at WWDC 2010. He described the iPhone 4 as the "biggest leap" since the iPhone was first released in 2007. Although photos of the new iPhone have been seen already, the design is quite impressive.

Antennas are integrated into the stainless steel frame of the new iPhone and aluminosilicate glass that's 30 times stronger than plastic makes up the front and back surfaces of the device. The iPhone 4 is 24 percent thinner than the iPhone 3GS.

What is the release date for the iPhone OS 4 / iOS 4 firmware update?

Apple will release iOS 4 (formerly iPhone OS 4) on Monday, June 21 for the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch (except first generation).

iOS 4 will be released on the iPad in fall 2010.

The new operating system supports many added features and will be a free download for iPhone and iPod Touch users. iOS 4 will not run on the original iPhone (2G) and has limited functionality on the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

The iPhone 4 ships on June 24 with iOS 4.
