Can I Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.7 with a Jailbroken iPhone?

The short answer is yes. In fact, according to the iPhone Dev-Team, the latest version of Mac OS X is more iPhone jailbreak-friendly than the previous version. This is due to the fact that version 10.5.6 prevented users from putting the iPhone into DFU mode.

The Dev-Team states, "The new 10.5.7 Leopard update is safe. In fact it's more jailbreak-friendly than 10.5.6, since the DFU-mode bug is gone."

Can I Update to iTunes 8.1 With a Jailbroken iPhone?

Our sources have updated to iTunes 8.1 without affecting the iPhone 2.1 jailbreak at all. In fact, performance during the sync process has improved dramatically. The iPhone backup is faster than ever using iTunes 8.1.

No news or advice has been posted by the iPhone DevTeam on this subject. Other reports indicate that the iTunes 8.1 update does not include new countermeasures from Apple against the iPhone 2.1 or 2.1.1 jailbreak. The software does include some interesting new features, however.

The iPhone Dev-Team's Golden Rule

In just a few short days the iPhone Dev-Team has worked out a fix for users interested in upgrading to 2.2.1 firmware without breaking the yellowsn0w unlock. As was announced earlier this week, the new firmware update from Apple changes the baseband version from 02.28.00 to 02.30.03, rendering yellowsn0w impotent.

If your device is an iPhone 3G and you're interested in unlocking now or in the future, you must follow the Dev-Team's Golden Rule. First and foremost do not use the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool. This means the official ipsw file for 2.2.1 must be modified so that the older baseband is preserved. Furthermore, the Dev-Team says this cannot be done with QuickPwn.
