Is the Apple Watch waterproof?

Can I wear the Apple Watch in the shower, swim with it or otherwise use the Apple Watch underwater?

The first-generation Apple Watch SE announced on September 15, 2020 is listed as "water resistant up to 50 meters."

Like its predecessors, the Apple Watch Series 6 is listed as "water resistant" and includes automatic handwashing detection with countdown thanks to watchOS 7.

Apple Watch Series 4 and 5 are listed as having a "water resistance rating of 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010." This means it is safe to submerge your Watch in shallow-water when showering or swimming. It is not recommended that you take your Watch scuba diving, waterskiing, or on other activities that involve "high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth."

The Apple Watch Nike+ and Hermès are also Series 4 models and carry the same water resistant rating of 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010.
Apple Watch Swim Proof

The Apple Watch Series 3 is listed as "swimproof." The fine print on notes that the Series 3 Watch is water resistant up 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010. This means it is safe to take your watch in swimming pools or the ocean, but it should not be used for scuba diving, water skiing, or other water activities where it may be submerged in deeper water.

Apple Watch Series 2 is water resistant to a depth of 50 meters (164 feet). Watch OS includes swim-focused fitness tracking features developed specifically for these activities. Apple has designed the Apple Watch Series 2 for complete water immersion on a daily basis.

Series 2 has been discontinued.

The Apple Watch Series 1 is splash and water resistant, but not waterproof.

The Apple Watch Series 1 has a water resistance rating of IPX7 under IEC standard 60529. This means the watch will survive if you wash your hands while wearing it or if it gets caught in the occasional rain storm, but you should take it off when swimming.

Current Android Wear watches are made to IP67 standards. The IP Code (IP means "ingress protection") classifies electrical enclosures by the degree of protection provided. The first digit (6) means it is completely dust proof while the second digit (7) indicates water resistance.

With a rating of IPX7, Apple Watch Series 1 is water resistant to a depth of one meter (about 3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes.

Upsetting. I am not buying a sport watch I cannot take swimming with me. All this time before the release, and they couldn't make it water resistant to swim with? Garmin's ForeRunner is. Their last two or three GPS activity watches have been. Come on Apple, you've already delayed this an incredibly long time. What's another few months to delay and make an actual 'sport watch' that's water resistant to swim with?

I totals agree. What a disappointment. What is the point of q sports watch that cannot do all the sports?

A sport watch that is not water proof?? Apple must be kidding this the most essential thing the watch has to provide! If they not going to change it they will loose a lot of business. I'm not going to buy it! Will wait what will come up next on the market!! Huge mistake of apple!!!!

So telling the time isn't the most essential feature of a sports watch?

How many sports involve water compared to those that involve submersion of more than a meter for more than 30 minutes? Significantly more.

What you need is a diving watch, which is not what the apple watch purports to be.

Yes I am pissed at Leeds festival. You get my point... Although maybe posting such a dumb statement above you probably don't.

Watch the water proof tests it's basically completly water proof unless your going deep sea diving lol

Actually I think apple secretly snuck water proof in there and didn't tell anyone. I have an apple watch and tested it out a whole day at the water park. I went full swimming in the deep end and touched the bottom with the watch. It works just as good as it did when I first got it. No damage to the watch or the speakers surprisingly. It actually works underwater if you lift your wrist. I'd say that it is waterproof.

How deep was the pool when you were swimming? I am asking because you said that you went down and touched the bottom of the pool and Apple says that it is water resistant at a depth of 1 meter.

I knew a friend who just bought an iWatch, he didn't realized that he was wearing it till he saw pictures of himself underwater wearing the iWatch off the coast of Key West for like 45 minutes - it works just fine!

The only reason I'm not buying one is because I am scared to take a shower with this thing. I do not swim on a regular basis and I could easily take it off for swimming. But if they say it will take washing your hands and the occasional rain. That tells me that it will not be good to take a shower with. Simply the only reason I am not buying one of these watches is their marketing on waterproof ability. Very disappointing

You should really read the details on the page because it clearly says the series 2 is waterproof

I completely agree. Needs to be waterproof to be a sports watch. It's bad enough it needs to be charged every 18 hours. I won't buy until they come out with a waterproof version.

That really sucks a watch thats not waterproof whats the whole point then to have a apple watch sport for?

The marketing team at Apple are delusional. They will end up ticking off their whole customer base when these watches start failing in mass quantities because they are only sweat resistant, according to Apple Associates. A good rule of thumb in marketing is that " You can only address the consumers needs, but you cannot change them". Once people get the watch and put it through their daily routine, Apple will have a big recall!

I am a swimmer... I would ask my parents to get me one, now I know that it is not waterproof, that's a no-no. Since I swim, I might as well give my business to Samsung, even though I love apple. Now Apple will lose a chunk of buyers, including myself. If your mission was to loose a lot of customers, mission complete. Good job apple. Good job.

Why would Apple produce a sports watch that is not waterproof? I was planning to purchase their I watch until I discovered their monumental marketing failure. Do they even perform marketing research? What a disappointment! Hope Apple hires a new marketing team soon!

I have a sports watch that is water resistant and not waterproof and it works perfectly for me. It was not designed to be water proof. If you want to walk around or go for a hard run then use it, but like most watches, it is water resistant. And besides, what other high end, and new watches are completely water proof? Besides, them being Apple makes up for that one little glitch. If all you care about is the water proofment of a watch, then go get a low end watch that can only tell time and have a stopwatch, but still be waterproof. There are so many electronics, and many new ones, that there is not enough room for it to be sealed off completely from everything and anything. If you think that that it is so easy to make it waterproof, then go ahead and make a watch that is as good electronically as Apple and is also waterproof.

and no dust protection. i wonder what is happened during few months...

i love the chronic complaining about what something this advanced doesn't do! Maybe you are not the target audience for this product... I have totally enjoyed owning the iwatch. I don't expect a watch that works like a phone to be waterproof

It's really not a big deal, for all of the things this "watch" can do, that it is not waterproof. Just set the timer, take it off, and dive in. Turn off the activity when you get out of the pool and it records your activity as a "brisk walk". This is an amazing tool that, in the short time I've owned it, has really helped me toward my fitness goals.

I been gone swiming with it 3 meter pool no issues ... Also spent 7hours in pool drinking with a little swiming no issiues ether . Apple watch rocks

Can you wear it in the shower or go kitesurfing with it on?

I was hesitant using my apple watch while swimming but I saw some YouTubers testing it underwater so I decided to take it swimming and I had no issue with it. I have been swimming with my apple watch for several weeks now and it's fully functional. Only thing I noticed is you can still receive calls but you can't hear the caller. Else all works texts etc.. I even check my aquarium parameters in the swimming pool . I don't keep my phone in the looker so the warch can still remain connected. Oh I do dive up to 1.5 meters. I was both surprised and pleased that my apple watch is secretly water proof.

Okay cry babies I now own the Iwatch and I love it. I made the huge mistake of going in the hot tub at the gym with it on by no means did I mean to but I did and in that hot water my watch still worked perfectly. So I was under the impression falsely I may say that it was water proof. Me and my son have one so when I washed dishes with it on the second time it got wet I decided I better check this out. And I found it it was water resistant how upset I was you can imagine, but I thought about it, Apple has made something amazing here and I'm fortunate to have one of the best made time peices there has been in a very long time minus the price for a truly high end piece of jewelry. Just be happy to be able to afford a phone in your watch my goodness how we fuss over a tiny flaw when it does all that it does. Remember Apple has out done themselves again. Customer for life.

Thanks for that comment Vetta! I am getting my watch this morning and can't wait. I am ALL about Apple products and looking forward to learning how it works! Good to know that I may be able to get it a little wet and not ruin it!

I'm with you Vetta!
