How can I setup IMAP for GMail on my iPhone?

Google has recently added IMAP as an available protocol for their GMail. This is a long awaited feature for GMail users (not just GMail iPhone users) as it allows for true synchronization between GMail and offline mail readers.

UPDATE: Now iPhone users can simply choose "GMail" from the list of built-in accounts when adding a new email account. Navigate to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Add Account -> Gmail and enter your account Address and Password. Touch "Save" and it will connect automatically.

Old information follows:

Google has offered two sources of easy to follow instructions, a text version and a video, for setting up GMail reading via IMAP on the iPhone. Both are copied below:

GMail via IMAP on the Apple iPhone: Text Instructions

  1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Mail.
  4. Tap Add Account.
  5. Tap Other. (Note: don't tap Gmail; if you do, you'll set up POP rather than IMAP. We are aware of this issue and are currently working to make setting up Gmail more intuitive for the iPhone.)
  6. Make sure that:
    • The IMAP tab is highlighted
    • Host Name is imap.gmail.com
    • User Name is your full Gmail address, including '@gmail.com'
    • For Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), Host Name is smtp.gmail.com
  7. Tap Save.

And you're done. You can verify your Advanced settings by tapping Settings > [your Gmail IMAP Account] > Advanced.

Incoming Settings
Use SSL: ON
Authentication: password
Server Port: 993

Outgoing Settings
Use SSL: ON
Authentication: Password
Server Port: 587

I have forgotten my gmail password and cannot get ANYWHERE!!!
There is no option to reset the password whatever it was.
My gmail continues to function well on the Mac on the ipad but not on my iphone.
Help would be appreciated!

None of these "fixes" have worked for me... This is the third time my phone has done this without me making any changes to my settings... Litterally I checked my mail last night on my phone with no problem then tried to send an email before even closing the app and it gave me the error. The first 2 times it randomly started working. First time after 6 weeks (tried all this crap I found online then to no avail), the second time after about 12 weeks and my making no changes it just worked one day. Now here we are round three. This time I have went through everything and even deleted my account from my phone and cannot even add it back.

Likewise. I hope Steve Jobs dies from cancer.

After doing all you said, it still gives me a message that the Miao.gmail.com isn't reaponding

I get the following error message: "Cannot Get Mail The user name or password for "imap.gmail.com" is incorrect."

when I do this it says cannot connect to the server- does anyone know what this means and what to do?

"Google may block sign-in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safe.
Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:
The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with version 6 or below
The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird"

"Change account access for less secure apps
To help keep G Suite users' accounts secure, we may block less secure apps from accessing G Suite accounts. As a G Suite user, you will see a "Password incorrect" error when trying to sign in. If this is the case, you have two options:
Option 1: Upgrade to a more secure app that uses the most up to date security measures. All Google products, like Gmail, use the latest security measures.
Option 2: Change your settings to allow less secure apps to access your account. We don't recommend this option because it might make it easier for someone to break into your account. If you want to allow access anyway, follow these steps:
Go to the "Less secure apps" section in My Account.
https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
Next to "Access for less secure apps," select Turn on. (Note to G Suite users: This setting is hidden if your administrator has locked less secure app account access.)"
