How to delete, quit and rearrange apps on the fourth-generation Apple TV

Apple TV

The fourth-generation Apple TV is the first Apple set top box that allows users to download and install third-party apps. This includes games which can be played using the Siri Remote or third-party MFi controllers. This means that users are capable of deleting apps or games from their Apple TV for the first time. Here's how to interact with apps on your Apple TV 4.

Delete an App

You can easily delete third-party apps that you have downloaded to your Apple TV from the App Store. The process is a lot like deleting an app on any iOS device such as the iPhone or iPad.

1. Press the Home button on the Siri Remote to return to the Home screen.
2. Select the app you want to delete using the Touch surface.
3. Press and hold the Touch surface and wait for the app to wiggle.
4. Press the Play/Pause button to delete the app.

Stock apps that come pre-installed on your Apple TV can be hidden inside the Settings app.

Rearrange apps

You can also rearrange apps on your Apple TV Home screen just like you do on your iPad or iPhone. Here's how:

1. Press the Home button on the Siri Remote to return to the Home screen.
2. Select the app you want to delete using the Touch surface on the Siri Remote.
3. Swipe the Touch surface to move the app.
4. Click the Touch surface to exit wiggle mode.

Force-quit an app

You can force-quit an app from the App Switcher when it is causing problems such as not loading or freezing. Here's how:

1. Push the Home button on the Siri Remote to return to the Home screen on your Apple TV.
2. Double tap the Home button like you would on your iPad or iPhone to open the App Switcher.
3. Find the app you want by swiping left or right using the touch surface of the Siri Remote.
4. Swipe up on your Siri Remote when the correct app is highlighted.
5. Press the Home button to close the App Switcher and return to the Home screen.

Bonus Tip

You can also take screenshots of your Apple TV by using your Mac with Xcode installed. Just connect your Apple TV to your Mac and launch Xcode. Open the Windows menu and select Devices from the list of menu options. Select Apple TV and click "Take Screenshot".
