The all-new Hulu experience has officially launched on the App Store. Subscribers can enjoy all of Hulu's on-demand content in a redesigned iOS app. One of the main attractions is the addition of live streaming TV channels, which are available as an account add-on for a higher price. The service includes over 50 channels, along with 50 hours of Cloud DVR storage for recording live feeds.
Hulu subscribers may have already noticed a big upgrade to their iPhone and iPad apps. The latest update has brought individual user profiles, making it easier to separate preferences for the whole family. Apple device owners will soon enjoy another added feature: downloadable content for offline viewing. The move comes hot on the heels of competitor Netflix, which has already implemented the feature for certain licensed movies and shows.
Apple will have some competition if the company continues to pursue a live TV channel package for the Apple TV. Both Hulu and YouTube have announced plans to launch streaming TV services as soon as next year. For its part, Apple has been rumored to be working on content deals for some time. A quality bundle of 25 channels was slated to arrive for monthly subscription in November 2015, however subsequent reports indicate Apple's plans have been delayed.
Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins announced this morning at a press event in New York City that the company plans to bring its free ad-supported streaming service to mobile devices. Currently non-subscribers can only access free full TV episodes on desktop computers or laptops. Hulu also announced plans to launch "the next generation" of the Hulu Plus iPhone app this summer.
According to a Hulu blog post, Hulu Plus has surpassed 6 million subscribers. The ad-supported subscription service costs $7.99 a month for full access to current and back episodes of popular television shows from ABC, Comedy Central, The CW, FOX, NBC, MTV and Univision.
Up until now only Android and iPad users could stream Hulu Plus using Google' s Chromecast, but today Hulu has added iPhone support. Chromecast allows users to stream movies, TV shows and music from Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus to their HDTV. Current Hulu Plus subscribers can download the iOS app for free from the Apple App Store now, and start streaming through Chromecast from their iPhones today.
Hulu Plus is $7.99 a month and gives you unlimited access to popular TV shows, movies and Hulu Originals. However, the service is still supported by commercials so Hulu can "reduce the monthly subscription price." Hulu Plus can also be viewed directly on your iPad, iPhone and Apple TV and supports the PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Wii and Wii U.
