iPhone 3G owners can finally stop threatening to throw away their phones. Users with older iPhones can now download legacy versions of apps that no longer support their device. For example, the iPhone 3G only supports iOS 4.2.1, and iPhone 3GS users will not be able to download iOS 7 when it is officially launched on September 18th. This causes a problem for users with older phones because most apps currently require iOS 4.3 or later to work.
As you can see from the screenshot above, the App Store will now give you the option to install the "last compatible version" of an app. So if you're stuck at iOS 4.2.1, but the app you want to install now requires iOS 4.3 to work, you can now download the 4.2.1 version of that app.
This is great news for people with jailbroken devices and older devices like the original iPhone. It is also good to know that you can now hold onto your iPhone even longer than before, and can ignore future iOS updates if you choose too.
Also don't forget, this does not mean you will have access to every app in the App Store. It will only work with apps that originally supported your current version of iOS.

We all need to buy a samsung mobile, it is the only way, to have a decision of when you should throw away your phone. It is not fair what apple is doing, because we were the first ones trusting iphones capacity and now we are dispensables.

There is one solution but a bit long it requires a pc 1)First download ifunbox in your pc 2)Download the old version of games or softwares and copy paste it in your iPhone 3G by ifunbox with a use cable.

It works well BUT. The previous version must BE AVAILABLE in AppStore - and e.g. Whatsapp is not. As I did, contact "support@whatsapp.com" and try to convince them to do so.

I was able to download the apps on the computers iTunes store (including nimbuzz, as it was one of the most common apps for iPhone 3g), but when I went to sync the apps to my phone, the same error message kept coming up: that my device is incompatible as it is out of date. I didn't get an option to download a previous version, for anything. Not even facebook.

I was trying to download whatsapp on my iphone 3gs ios Version 4.1 but it is asking for version 4.3.
Please advise me on what to do?
Please help me....

The App Store never gives me the option to download an older version of any app. 99.99% of the apps listed in the store must be developed post-4.2.1 ... so not exactly helpful.

This does not work, tried downloading Facebook on an old iPhone (3gs) and could not. The app store's message is that I needed to download iOS 7.0 to get the app. So these legacy apps no longer work. Have to have a phone with the latest iOS to get the apps. On older Apple iPhones the iOS can only go so far. Everyone is out of luck for Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Really hate that Apple just leaves out users of older iPhones, that is why lots of people are switching to Android.
