iPhone 3GS: Keep Your Jailbreak Options Open

iPhone blogger George Hotz has discovered a new layer of security in the recently released iPhone 3GS. If you're waiting on iPhone Dev-Team to release a jailbreaking and/or unlocking solution for your iPhone 3GS, generating a unique certificate for your device could keep your options open.

Apple will likely release iPhone OS 3.0.1 soon, possibly postponing a jailbreak even longer. George Hotz explains the process of generating a certificate below.

Sony and Ericsson to Compete With iPhone

Sony may have brought us the Walkman, but Apple has been dominating portable music players in recent years with the iPod. With the release of the iPhone and iPod Touch, Apple is pushing further into Sony's territory with mobile gaming. Apple's AppStore has even started to attract major game developers.

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) has sold over 50 million units in the last four years, but Apple is quickly catching up, with 40 million video-game-capable units sold in only two years. According to the Nikkei Business Daily, Sony intends to compete directly with Apple's iPhone with its own mobile phone.

Will Apple Recall the iPhone 3GS Due to Battery Problems?

Complaints about the iPhone battery are not new to Apple. Owners of older iPhones often try to conserve limited battery power, especially since the iPhone is a power-hungry device. Unlike some other smartphones, spare batteries cannot be toted around since the battery is fully enclosed.

These issues pale in comparison to the latest complaints from some owners of the new iPhone 3GS. Apparently the batteries in some devices have become too hot to touch. In some cases, the white plastic back is being discolored by the excessive heat.

Tip: Show iPhone Battery Percentage Remaining

The little battery icon in the taskbar at the upper right of the iPhone screen is okay at giving a rough indication of battery life remaining. Unfortunately when it comes to details the icon is not so useful.

Luckily there are ways to display the exact percentage of power remaining on your iPhone battery. There are two different methods you can use to achieve this goal depending on your iPhone hardware.

iPhone Dev-Team Delays 3GS Jailbreak Release

iPhone 3GS owners who would like to jailbreak and/or unlock their new devices will have to wait a little bit longer. The iPhone Dev-Team has already jailbroken the iPhone 3GS running OS 3.0 but they are postponing the public release.

The cat and mouse game is never simple. Dev-Team is worried that releasing a jailbreak now will give Apple too much information. The iPhone OS 3.0.1 release is surely coming soon, and if Apple corrects the bug Dev-Team is exploiting then future iPhone 3GS users will not be able to hack their phones.
