The thaw between Apple and Amazon continues. Hot on the heels of Amazon Prime Video coming to the Apple TV, Amazon has decided to start selling Apple's set top box in its online store. Amazon.com has already posted new product pages for different Apple TV models, although as of this writing they are still unavailable for purchase. Interested buyers can click a button to receive email notification when the products are ready to ship.
After months of waiting, Apple TV owners with Amazon Prime subscriptions can now skip AirPlay. The tvOS App Store features Amazon Prime Video, a stand-alone app bringing thousands of movies and TV shows to streaming directly on the Apple TV. Both fourth-generation Apple TV and Apple TV 4K models support the app, which is a free download on the App Store. Support will also be provided for the third-generation Apple TV with no App Store access.
Apple has made a deal to revive the Emmy Award-winning series Amazing Stories. Steven Spielberg's anthology was based on the comic books of the same name and originally aired on NBC from 1985 to 1987. Each episode presented a different story, ranging from horror to science fiction, drama and even an animated episode.
Apple plans to launch an update to the Apple TV at its September iPhone event. According to Bloomberg, the new set-top box will support 4K HDR content thanks to an upgraded processor. More powerful hardware is only part of the equation, however with Apple taking on a "renewed focus on the living room".
Amazon video fans may soon be able to watch their favorite Prime shows and movies directly on the Apple TV. Currently, Amazon Prime Video subscribers must AirPlay streaming content to the set top box using an iOS device like the iPhone or iPad. According to reports, a native Apple TV app from Amazon should arrive in the App Store during the third quarter of 2017.
