Trusted Source Gives Engadget the Skinny on the 3G iPhone

According to a recent post, Engadget has it "on authority" that the 3G iPhone is already in the hands of a few privileged beta testers and is undergoing trials for a possible release come July 2008. Previous rumors have suggested that the second generation iPhone is scheduled for a June 2008 release, so this falls roughly in line with previous indications.

back of the new 3G iphone?

Engadget's source, which they describe as "trusted," gave the low-down on some of the 3G iPhone's highlight features, which include

:

  • 3G (sort of goes without saying, doesn't it?)
  • real GPS (say goodbye to crappy WiFi and/or cell-tower positioning)
  • back panel is now glossy black plastic (no more satin metal)
  • 3G iPhone is a bit thicker
  • no more recessed headphone jack
  • screen appears to be the same as the original iPhone

The picture shown above is not purported to be an image of the actual 3G iPhone, it is intended only as an example of what the back of the 3G iPhone might well look like (via iPodObserver).

It is worth bearing in mind that a recent update to the iPhone 2.0 software/firmware (available only to authorized iPhone developers) was revealed to contain GPS-specific code. Does this suggest that Apple is well underway preparing the iPhone OS for use on the 3G iPhone? Of course it does. Does it mean that the next generation iPhone is coming in July?

Maybe, maybe not.
