Nullriver has released a new beta version of their revolutionary application manager for third-party software on the Apple iPhone. The latest version, 3.0 beta 3, includes a host of new features and a completely redone interface.

The new release provides a much easier to navigate interface which replaces the old single list layout of earlier versions. Applications, like before, are organized into categories but these categories now behave as collapsing folders rather than simple list headers.

Though not technically iPhone news, the release of Apple's latest version of OS X, Leopard, is certainly of interest to many iPhone owners. And not simply because many iPhone owners are Mac owners. As the iPhone is based on a version of the OS X operating system, features and capabilities of the iPhone will likely be closely linked to Leopard - as they have been with the current version of OS X.

That said, Apple announced today that Max OS X Leopard will go on sale on October 26th at 6:00pm at both retail outlets and the Apple online store. According to Steve Jobs,

“Leopard, the sixth major release of Mac OS X, is the best upgrade we’ve ever released ... and everyone gets the ‘Ultimate’ version, packed with all the new innovative features, for just $129.”

According to Apple, the new version of Leopard brings over 300 new features to the table. Some of the

Erica Sadun of TUAW, well known in the iPhone community for "Erica's utilities", has been liveblogging her attempt to replicate the success of two iPhone hackers, named "dinopio" and "Edgan", who have recently regained access to the full file tree of the iPhone through a bit of upgrade trickery. The latest update show that Erica has acheived similar success, proven by screen shots she has posted.

Evidently, access was regained by symbolically linking (symlinking) a portion of the iPhone's filesystem prior to an upgrade from firmware version 1.0.2 to version 1.1.1. The symlink in question is created by backing up the phone's Media directory and then symlinking the filesystem root to the Media directory.

Once the symlink is in place and the iPhone is upgraded, access is gained to the entire file tree using iPHUC (the iPhone Utility Client). In Sadun's tests, read and write access is tested and working, and a copy of the new Mobile Music Store application (MobileStore.app) has been pulled down.
