Does iMessage on the iPhone Have a Security Flaw?

Reports of iMessages being received on the wrong iPhone have resurfaced, this time with Gizmodo posting a slew of information not intended for their eyes. Apparently an Apple employee briefly inserted his personal SIM card into a customer's iPhone, and ever since his iMessages are being delivered to her device.

iMessage SIM card bug

This is after the customer's iPhone was reset and her personal infomation including her AppleID was reentered on the handset. Similar reports of the problem have cropped up intermittently in the past, with Ars Technica weighing in on the issue. Support forum threads regarding the problem have sprung up at Apple and elsewhere as well.

Pod2g Releases Untethered iOS 5 Jailbreak Video

iPhone hacker pod2g just released a video showing his new untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. The video shows the new exploit working on an iPod Touch even after it has been powered down and turned back on. Pod2g tweeted that the jailbreak "will work on iOS 5.0.1" and that he plans to test it on an iPad 2 and iPhone 4S when he is ready. He also tweeted a link to his new blog which he says he'll update when he has more info.

Today I succeed in jailbreaking my iPod 3G. The exploit is user-land, rely on a user ROP payload and a kernel write anywhere exploit.

I can't give much details right now, but here are the next steps :
- upgrade the iPod 3G to iOS 5.0.1
- do the same on iPhone 4 / iOS 5.0.1
- then iPad 1 & iPod 4G

At every step, the exploit code needs certainly to be reworked, but I really don't know right now. Next, I'll return to the research for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. I don't know if I gonna release first for other devices or not. I've to think about it. Feel free to give your opinion.

Downgrade to iOS 5.0 With iFaith v1.4 [Jailbreak]

Apple isn't playing nice with the jailbreaking community and has recently started blocking devices from restoring to older firmware. If you accidently updated to 5.0.1 and want to restore your device, hacker iH8sn0w has a new solution for you. iFaith v1.4 allows you to save your iOS device’s SHSH blobs which should allow you to downgrade your device in the future.

Unfortunately it doesn't support A5 devices. Meaning if you recently purchased an iPhone 4S, or upgraded to iOS 5.0.1, you're still out of luck for now. A4 owners are being urged by the jailbreaking community to download the latest update of iFaith and to save their SHSH blobs immediately.

Apple Admits Using Carrier IQ Software

25-year-old Trevor Eckhart discovered a "rootkit" hidden in various Android handsets that logs information like text messages, location and encrypted web searches. The company behind the software, Carrier IQ, claims their technology is an innocent diagnostics tool that doesn't record keystrokes or illegally track users. However, Eckhart's YouTube video below seems to suggest otherwise. On Thursday, Apple joined several other carriers and manufacturers in coming clean about using the software. Here is their statement in full (via All Things D):

Carrier IQ CEO Larry Lenhart

“We stopped supporting Carrier IQ with iOS 5 in most of our products and will remove it completely in a future software update. With any diagnostic data sent to Apple, customers must actively opt-in to share this information, and if they do, the data is sent in an anonymous and encrypted form and does not include any personal information. We never recorded keystrokes, messages or any other personal information for diagnostic data and have no plans to ever do so.”

Snap iPhone Camera Photos Remotely With iOS 5

Thanks to a built-in feature of iOS 5, the iPhone can easily take photos without ever touching the display screen. You may already be familiar with the fact that pictures can be taken by pressing the up volume button on the side of the iPhone, much like the shutter release on a compact camera. This improves the picture taking experience on the iPhone, but can still shake the device.

iPhone cable release iOS 5

Photographers looking to stabilize their cameras during shooting look to use a remote control, or a cable shutter release to snap the photo without touching the camera. iPhones come with a modern version of the cable release in the Apple Remote Earphones.
