iOS 9 introduced several new features that greatly improve the overall Mail experience - the ability to preview emails and links within them using 3D Touch, the ability to attach files and save attachments to iCloud Drive and the ability to annotate attachments.
iOS 9 has finally brought us the long awaited support for file attachments. Whereas before you could only insert a photo or video, you can now attach spreadsheets, .pdf's, text documents and all manner of other files. To attach a file, simply long press anywhere in the body of the message until a row of options pops up. Hit the right arrow until you see "Add Attachment." Tap on it and it will take you to your iCloud Drive by default.
Update: According to the changelog, iOS 9.1 "resolves an issue that left a gray bar in the body of an Audio Message."
A new bug is affecting the Messages app in iOS 9. Some users are experiencing a stuck voice text when they accidently tap the microphone icon near the text bar while sending a text message. When this happens a user will not to be able to bring up the iOS keyboard to send a text message. The only fix seems to be closing the app by using the App Switcher. Here's how:

The jailbreak tweak Typecast brings a new level of utility to iOS messaging apps. Once installed, Typecast will display icons in multiple places to track when a message is actively being typed. The same treatment is given to read receipts, making the status easier to read and much more prominent. The best part is that Typecast works with three apps: the stock Messages app, Kik and WhatsApp.

Microsoft is attempting to make email relevant again by launching a new " in-and-out email" client for the iPhone. Send is another Microsoft Garage project that aims to make emailing more like sending a text message. The app eliminates annoying email requirements, such as a subject line, to allow users to quickly respond to their email contacts.
